Music Mentorship: Online versus Physical Training: Afri-inleo Initiative 28
The desire to gain mastery especially in music for beginners comes with certain challenges; some of which are, the tutor to select, the means of learning, and the resources involved. If one of these is ineffective, it affects the singer in delivering what the audience will find appealing. Music isn't just singing, it's more than just the physical act, it speaks of the person singing it, and through them, delivers a message that impacts the people listening to the music. But then, every uprising musician needs mentorship. This mustn't be someone who can sing, but someone who knows what it takes to make an impact through what they sing.
Personally, I love music ,but I can't sing. I've tried one to two mentorship classes, and I noticed no improvement. It was totally my fault, I had this mentality that never changed-believing that my voice is bad. Each time I try to sing, I hear myself reminding myself how bad my voice is, and my mentors didn't notice this part of me until I gave up to the voice and resumed back to the me who settles for not-trying. So most often it isn't about the means in which one is mentored, but the ability of the mentor to see past one's voice and listen to the voices within his students.
Physical mentorship has its advantages and disadvantages and so is online mentorship. One's preference is based on what works for them best. Physical mentorship may provide one with the tools and encouragement needed to grow past the basis but at a point one becomes too familiar with the mentor that he makes little or no impact in discipline. Physical mentorship also may not be convenient for people who have hectic working hours. Below I'll mention a few advantages and disadvantages of both online and physical mentorship and at the end make a conclusion based on my preference which may not work for everyone.
Physical mentorship involves receiving certain training in a physical environment where the mentor is present in person. The students are often taught in classes or a theatre room. Some of the advantages of physical mentorship includes
- Access to tools for practice
- Practical training that may not be included in online courses
- Less distractions and
- Suitable for people who learn slowly
And some of the disadvantages are:
- Crisis with One's schedules
- Familiarity may come in and discipline spared
- Inability to be free (for some)
But just like physical mentorship, online mentorship also has its disadvantages. These are:
Unlike the physical mentorship, online mentorship involves learning through the internet and other means where the mentor is not physically present. Some persons chooses online mentorship for these reasons
- Conveniency
- They dislike crowds, therefore feels more free learning online
- It may cost less
- Some people find it easier sharing their weaknesses online compared to a physical gathering.
But just like physical mentorship, online mentorship also has its disadvantages. These are:
- No tools to enhance the learning process
- Not suitable for slow learners
- People easily get bored learning online
- There's often distractions from doing other activities
In conclusion: In as much as selecting a style of mentorship is based on one's convenience, physical mentorship has more advantages than online mentorship. Learning as a group can be a powerful force in overcoming that silent voices of discouragement and physical mentorship comes with benefits of practical experiences.
