Ideologies: The Intersection of Faith and Secular culture: Afri-inleo Initiative 25
There has been an intense debate on popular culture (Secular) of music and spirituality (faith), with many people believing secular music has no effect on one's spirituality, and the other few holding firm that secular music has a big damage on one's faith. Everyone has a right to what they believe, whether or not they agree to any of the motions, but there's always a reason for what they believe. Secular music are genres of music not centered on religion, but popular culture while spirituality is having an appearance for religious value and things that concerns faith.
Secular music is known for promoting ideas that are against religious belief and morals. Vague words are used sometimes, a thing religion speaks against. Spirituality on the other hand believes what we listen to often has a means of influencing our thoughts and transforming our minds to conform to its nature and this is where spirituality detest secular music and anything around it. Music as mentioned in our previous posts has influence not just to our thoughts but our souls, having the ability to stir certain emotions, reactions, and responses. In this stance, I have a strong conviction that secular music can affect not just our spirituality, but makes us look like a secular culture.
Spirituality is an appreciation for religious values. This involves studying the bible, singing songs that edify one's spirit and praises to the celestials. Some Secular music do not have the elements of edification, but rather promote immorality which is against spiritual growth. Music has the ability to transform one, especially when listened to frequently. Whatever a man thinks, so he is and what music does is to draw one's spirit to a point where one thinks in that manner, it doesn't happen overnight, it's often a gradual process that forms branches as it grows.
Music speaks to our spirit person and this is why it has an effect on one's spiritual life. Whatever has the ability to communicate with one's spirit also has the ability to change it, this is why wise people advise that one be guided in what he listens to and sees. It's not about the wordings, it's about the medium which is a powerful tool in communicating with one's spirit.
One may argue that secular music are just words or that there are certain secular music with great lessons, yes that's true, but none of the secular music points to God as our dependant but rather tries to teach us a wisdom that only profits the world. Gain wisdom through secular music and you'll think You're wise in the wrong knowledge. Listening to secular music in itself is not a sin and may not be considered as one, but the fear lies in allowing the knowledge of it to have access to our spiritual life which in turn could affect our devotion to religious value. I believe balance is essential in everything we do, when a balance is kept between spirituality and our secular culture, then one will be conscious of overstepping the boundaries.

It really shouldn't be considered as a sin though, some people considered it as one.
Yeah, people who are over spiritual do so, a sign that they have not learned to keep a balance
