An Unconventional Holiday Tradition
Keeping along the same subject as my last post, I love including "Santa Lost A Ho" by the Christmas Jug Band in my holiday playlist. It's a very funny and catchy tune that came from the 2002 album "Uncorked." Every time I play this song, everybody in the room ends up singing along, even if they have never heard the song before. The lyrics are that addictive!
This band dates back to the short-lived Monday Night Wild Turkey Jug Band and has grown rapidly over the last 40 years. Norton Buffalo is featured on "I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas" off "Uncorked." Even though that song has been covered numerous times, many a listener doesn't realize that we have the Marx Brothers to thank for that tune.
Country Joe & the Fish and Commander Cody are just two of the acts that musicians on this album came from. And they take the jug band theme seriously, as quite a few of the musicians are accomplished on harmonica, old arch type f-hole guitars, jaw harp, washtub bass and washboard. They have even been known to have used that great old percussion tool known as the coat hanger.
Appearing on "Uncorked" include Dan Hicks, Austin Delone, Tim Eschliman, Paul Rogers (not Paul Rodgers from Bad Company), Jim Rothermel, Lance Dickerson, Blake Richardson, Nick Dewey, Greg "Duke" Dewey, Paul Wenninger, Angela Strehli, Maria Muldaur and Mike Duke. I apologize to anyone I failed to mention. "Santa Lost A Ho" is a great way to keep a holiday smile going!
