Ok. I’ve come to the conclusion that watching / listening to modern dancehall should be seen as watching a movie. It’s not reality, but at times life imitates art and visa versa.

Now with that out of the way let’s check out a song by Skillbeng featuring Nardo Wicks titled “16 Choppa”.

The first time I heard the track it reminded of Skillibeng’s monster hit “Crocodile Teeth” which I knew was going to be a huge hit the first time I heard it.16 choppa has that same vibe. Below are the song credits via Spotify filled by the video for your growing pleasure.

The Tune

What I like about the song is it has an infectious beat that is obviously dancehall but of course modern trap style. The piano melody makes it sound really intriguing. I also like the way the song was mixed in terms of the deep use of reverb at certain points. The fact that they didn’t clearly layout the chorus at times makes the song interesting as well. It is like Skilli’s verse blends into Nardo’s. Not the usual formula at all.

The music Video

The music video for “16 Choppa” really brings the badness across. The all shades hot babes marching across the beach in their bikinis 👙 crouching down to buss some shots at the start is wicked. Like a scene form Quentin Tarantino movie 🎥. Then you have Skilli and Nardo on an air boat zooming through the swamps with glimpses of crocs in the water while they are holding the "16 Choppa". Pretty neat visuals that makes you know this was shot in Florida.

I like the sound for it's versatility: I can see it being used in a movie and/or a dance performance.
