Park Park Carnival (Part 1)
The origin of music festivals can be traced back to ancient celebrations related to music and the arts, often associated with religion, community, or seasonal festivities. The modern concept of music festivals draws significant inspiration from the music culture of the 1960s, particularly the hippie culture and countercultural movements. Over time, large-scale music concerts and festival celebrations began to emerge, such as the Woodstock Music Festival and the Monterey Pop Festival. These music festival events initially started as regional gatherings with a vision that could range from pursuing musical joy to advocating world peace or social change. The attendance at these events grew from a few hundred people at the outset to often gathering tens of thousands, eventually evolving into globally recognized gatherings.
Musicians and music groups choose to perform at music festivals to showcase their musical works while allowing the audience to enjoy the pleasure of music. These festivals often incorporate elements of art, culture, food, crafts, social interaction, and education, creating a comprehensive entertainment experience. The Puli Music Festival, also known as "BiBi Carnival," is a local music festival in Taiwan. While it may not have a long history or significant fame, it serves as a stage for underground music groups in Taiwan.
Renowned rock singer, songwriter, and music producer Wu Bai, along with his rock band Wu Bai & China Blue, is rumored to have started from an underground music group in Taiwan. They gradually made their way to stardom, proving that persistence and performance are essential in the music industry. Similarly, when the famous rock band Mayday debuted, they frequently performed at college concerts, aiming to gain visibility. This principle holds true – to be seen, you have to showcase your talents.
The Puli Music Festival takes place in the scorching heat of July, spanning two days of performances. The event features container stages, DJ stages, and various performance stages, all integrated with the simple market within the Taipei Expo Park, creating a multifaceted entertainment space. Nearly a hundred different-sized performance groups participate, covering various music genres including rock, hip-hop, R&B, pop, and acoustic performances. For me, the thunderous and electrifying music is enjoyable to listen to occasionally. Some lesser-known bands may not possess the same level of expertise, but their passion can compensate for any technical shortcomings, delivering an immersive and liberating experience to the live audience.
What surprised me the most was seeing the band "Quarterback" on the performance lineup. As far as I knew, Quarterback was a rock band formed in 1995, with multiple albums released and several nominations for the Golden Melody Award's "Best Band" category. They had gained a certain level of fame and a fan base. However, many renowned bands often disband or fade from the spotlight due to various reasons, so it was unexpected to see them performing here. Unfortunately, their scheduled performance was at 7:00 PM, and I had other commitments later, so I missed the chance to hear them live, which was a bit regrettable.
