Para muchos, los de Berkeley rompieron una regla no escrita del género cuando ficharon por la multinacional Warner para producir Dookie hace 30 años. Aunque formen parte del engranaje corporativo musical, sigue teniendo mérito que denuncien o critiquen ciertas cosas en sus letras y sus acciones:

"Green Day nunca se ha callado; se han atrevido a reivindicar y ser los altavoces de ciertos temas, y puede que esto sea lo más punk que pueden hacer desde la posición en la que están".

El conjunto estadounidense ha vendido casi 100 millones de copias en todo el mundo. En 2010 se estrenó una adaptación teatral del álbum American Idiot en Broadway. el musical fue nominado para Tony Awards, el cual, recibió comentarios positivos en general.

A mediados de 2011 la revista Kerrang! los nombró como el segundo grupo más influyente surgido en los últimos treinta años, solo por detrás de Metallica. Según una encuesta pública, en la publicación de Rolling Stone, se eligió a Green Day como el mejor conjunto de punk de la historia.
