Bangers for Hive: August 2023

Yo. How goes it you fine ass digital degenerates? It has been a long, long time since I've done a music recommendation post, so I figured I'd shake all the dust and grime off my bones and give it another go. If you've never checked out one of these posts I've made, I'm just going to share a few tracks I have found in recent times that I would consider boner jams with you guys and give you a short TLDR opinion on said track. If you follow me you probably already know I'm a bit of a metalhead, so a lot of these tracks will be oriented towards heavier genres. Though I do try to throw in at least one track for those of you with bitch made ears.

Anywho, lets get into the tunes!

1:Sinkhole by The Acacia Strain

Our first track for this post comes from a band that I've been on the fence with over the years. The Acacia Strain are a deathcore band that has been around since the mid 2000's, their old stuff was really fun for its time and they were one of the earlier bands in this genre that I found. However, after the first few years of music I found that their sound and vibe just never really evolved too much and felt a bit stagnant for my personal taste. Then they dropped the album Step Into The Light, which is full of fresh bangers with a new sound and style mixed in. This song in particular is a favorite of mine, partially in that it features the vocalist from a rising band that is one of my favorite slam metal/hardcore bands (SUNAMI), and also partially in that this song just slaps. The drum production is top notch, the riffs here while still being very deathcore like also incorporate some doom metal elements as well as some hardcore punk style riffs. The vocalist also changes up his style on this album finally and incorporates some fresh changes which was nice. This whole album is great and I would highly recommend it.

2: Chunker by Hail The Sun

Coming second on the list is the one bone I'll throw out for those of you who aren't metal fans. Hail The Sun are a post hardcore/math rock band based out of California that have been around since 2009. I've been a fan of these guys for a long time, and they recently dropped a new album a couple weeks ago that I've been vibing to. This song in particular is a favorite one, as it kind of brings me back to my highschool years of summer time with my buddies. Maybe that's just a me something that people here won't relate to, but it definitely makes some of my old neurons fire off. Lots of fun instrumental work going on in this song with nice melodies, and while these guys do some screams occasionally it's almost entirely clean vocals that are definitely in the same vibe as bands like Dance Gavin Dance, Coheed and Cambria and Circa Survive.

3: Viking by Slaughter to Prevail

To keep things balanced, we'll now go to the entire opposite vibe and spectrum of the last song for our third track, Viking by Slaughter to Prevail. This russian deathcore band has been gaining popularity over the past few years, and for good reason, as they're one of the most fun, high energy and unique metal bands currently going, in my opinion. This single was recently dropped by them after demoing it on their recent US tour, and boy does it sure slap. The drummer for this band is absolutely fucking insane, the vocalist Alex is basically a grizzly bear personified into a human being with some absolutely sick range for his vocals. The guitarist use some really fun riffs for this track keeping things very slammy with a fun little section of black metal chords. There's even a pretty catchy catchy chorus melody that almost reminds me of an hardcore/emo type lead. And, to top this song off it has one of the best breakdowns in a metal song that we've gotten in the past 8 months. Big recommend.

4 The Frozen Lake pt2 (The Ruined) by Worm Shepard:

As for our fourth track on the list, it comes from a band I hadn't even heard of until about a week ago called Worm Shepard. These guys are a blackened deathcore band meaning they take heavy influence from the black metal genre, which certainly shows. This track was a single released a few months ago, however they just dropped an EP recently with a few other songs to go with it. I have to say, I'm really bummed I just found out about this band. They're extremely talented musicians and this song is kind of fucking nutty. The vocalist has crazy screaming range, and is making some sounds on the EP this song is from that are fucking weird in a good way. As an example, there's a breakdown in this song that is basically primal grunt screams which is fucking odd but I'm all here for it. There's also been this big usage of symphonic stuff in metal over the past year or two, and while this band uses something similar it comes across as more atmospheric than symphonic, and I feel like it gives more room for the actual music to breathe and just adds to it. There's a cool little piano melody that goes throughout the full song and I think that's also pretty fun. The guitar and drums are great with lots of fun riffs and temp change ups. There's just lots of good shit here to enjoy, and the song ends in an upbeat manner which is not something you normally get with metal music these days. Definitely would recommend to anyone who loves heavy tunes.

5: One Love by Rise of the Northstar

I suppose to finish us off on this list I'll recommend another song that's definitely lighter than most of these other tracks, while also still being a fun metal jam. This song came out about 6 or 7 months ago but I just found it maybe 2 months ago. It comes from the band Rise of the Northstar, a french metal band that has been putting out nu-metal songs, a genre I can't believe has circled around and become popular again. I could make a whole post talking about the history of nu-metal and what's happened to the genre in the last 20 years, but I'll save that for the future if I ever get a following who gives a shit. Anywho, this track incorporates some hip hop elements in with guitar riffs and vocals that sound straight out of the early 2000's nu-metal scene, but with modern production and style which blends together really well (Definitely some metalcore vibes in here as well). While this band doesn't have a ton of tracks that I personally love, I definitely dig this one and for those of you wanting something new to listen to that isn't filled with blastbeats and the vocals of a demonic pig being cast from hell, this will probably be up your alley.

There you go. There's the list. It's done. Over. You can go home now. But, don't forget to tip your curator before you go in the form of a fat upvote to give me some digital milk money, or else I might have to hit you over the head with a god damn guitar. On a serious note, I'm not sure if I'll be doing these types of posts regularly or not. I honestly find it hard to stay motivated to make written content in this type of form with the music community on this platform being pretty all over the place. But, hey, maybe this can be a monthly or semi monthly thing from me for those of you who bother to check this shit out.

Until next time, doods! Later!

The vocalist Alex does have some crazy range, definitely some of the best lows in the game from his huge diaphragm.
