You MUST Laugh!

avatar

Greetings and salutations Hivers. Today I thought we'd do another You Should Laugh More post.

Research has shown that laughter is good for us. It has all kinds of health benefits. Despite most of us knowing this, none of us laugh enough. Yeah, I know, being an adult is tough, and furthermore there is a lot of grim stuff happening in the world. These things may be true, but that just is all the more reason for trying to get a little laughter into our lives.

The Old Telephone Voice Disguiser Trick

This is one of those things that probably hasn't aged well. It might look like pure surealism now, but the handkerchief over the phone to disguise the speaker's voice was a very common trope in police dramas of the time. Leslie Nielsen mocks it very well.

Hugh Laurie Interviews Michael Jackson

Speaking of other things that might appear as complete ridiciousless without context.... Well, this is still completely over-the-top, but it is based on a real thing. For a time in the 80s—even after the release of Bad when it had become extremely obvious—when Jackson and fans completely denied that he had ever had any plastic surgery. This video is having a bit of fun with that.

Abbott and Costello Parallel Parked Car

Maybe I just like old comedy... we are going way back here. Some great lines in this skit. The main bit is something of a very simplified rehash of Who's on First, but it works.

Kramer Vs. The US Postal Service

Jumping ahead to more modern comedy, did you ever think about what might be involved in canceling your mail? Kramer gave it a try.

Mitchell & Webb - Needlessly ambiguous terms

Did you ever notice how the bad guys are forever using ambiguous terminology instead of just saying what they actually mean? One man did!

Direct link

Americas Most Wanted Milhouse

"Remember how I got Milhouse's picture on America's Most Wanted?"

Just why did Milhouse stay friends with Bart?

Direct link

Police Squad - Interrogation

And we'll end where we began, with Police Squad. This is just about the best interrogation scene I can imagine. Don't miss the sight gag at the end.

So what do you think? Did any of them make you laugh or were they just stupid? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

I remember watching Police Squad as a kid on Nick at Nite. Humor was so different back then.

Too bad no one understood Police Squad at the time, so it was canceled after only like 8 episodes. While I'm glad we got the great movies out of that, think of all the great TV episodes we missed out on. Oh well.

Didn't Dragnet come from that too and it did a little better didn't it?

Dragnet was actually a radio show back in the 40s staring a very young Jack Webb. He revived it in the late 60s for the TV show we all remember. I think the TV show was fairly popular at the time, lasting a few years. The parody movie with Tom Hanks was great! Well... I remember it being great. I haven't watched it since I was a kid. Anyway, some of the tropes Police Squad made fun of were from Dragnet.

Ah okay, I was thinking they were all tied together, but I couldn't remember if that was accurate or not.

I could be wrong, but I think Get Smart might have made fun of Dragnet more directly than Police Squad. They were on the air at or around the same time, so the mocking would have been more easily understood by the audience at the time.

I remember the Get Smart reruns. That was more a homage to James Bond kind of like Austin Powers.

And the Man from UNCLE—which I've never watched, but I know that classic opening that Get Smart ripped off.

The humor back then was different from now. I always like the man with white hair (last movie) He had many films that I've watched before and I find him vey funny.

That was hilarious! I still liked Hugh Laurie better as a comedian, he was just sooo funny! Seinfeld one is great as was The Simpsons. It's such a shame Leslie Nielsen is gone, he was so funny... Great post!

I agree. Hugh does ok in his more dramatic roles, but he was made to be a comic.

😂🤣... Laughter is indeed the best medicine. The clip on murder and ambiguous terms got me... Like why do you need to complicate words? 😂
