Let's listen to a special Medieval Music from Spain, Catalonia, But a Russian Version + Dance
Hey guys, lets listen to some Medieval Music, specially one of the pieces that I have found from a unique and special collection of music pieces that it is related to Spain,Catalonia and also the whole of Europe.
First time when I saw this video on YouTube which it wrotes: Helvetia - Stella Splendens, I saw the clothes of these awesome dancers and then I said to myself, they should be Irish, or Scotish (cause these clothes usually reminds me of them)
but then I saw in the video's description that they wrote Russian words, and I wondered, but well, as I have found a friend from Russia (she is also a dancer) who shows me how is life there, I can say that it is more understandable for me now.
I even find out that they have some dance shows that they go on a stage and dance with American songs, but well this post is not focused on Russians, only this dance video + Music are about them, which they did it really perfect and I suggest you guys to watch it and just feel the Medieval times for a short time and even relax with its music cause it has that spiritual feeling in it that they could capture it so well in these modern times.
And before I forget, This version of this ancient music was performed by Gilead band which founded in 2011 in the city of Tyumen, Russia.
and these dancers who called themselves Helvetia (Historical dance studio "Helvetia")
Helvetia - Stella Splendens (Gilead - Stella Splendens)
And then I was thinking about how did this song created? where is the source of this music? I searched and find a more completed version which contains more pieces which also has vocal groups singing along in some parts. but if you want to hear the original version of the song "Stella Splendens". you should go forward to minute 9:51
"Stella Splendens in Monte"
And before I forget this one is a completed version by Jordi Savall, a Spanish conductor and composer and he is also a viol player. He started his professional musical path from 1970's.
After doing some researches and reading about this piece online, I realized that it’s connected to a religious event that used to take place on the way to a monastery in Catalonia called Montserrat. In fact, this music was written and performed for those going to visit that holy place. Another thing I learned is that the written works from this piece have influenced modern-day polyphonic music performances.
These works are also recognized as a turning point in sacred music. What I found interesting is that this music is a mix of local folk culture and religion, combining both dance music and religious and folk music from the past. Based on what I read, it was said that this style of music was quite unusual and different for its time, which was the medieval period. And these pieces come from manuscripts in Catalan, which not only contain musical notes but also lyrics.
I hope you enjoyed and feel good after listening to these beautiful pieces.
I wish you the bests!
Some of those outfits do look Scottish, but the kilt seems to be common across many cultures. A friend is quite in medieval music and you can find a lot of it online now. I think the internet can be good for preserving culture and bringing people who share an interest together.
One of my bands plays old music and we have played for some druids. People have always been into music and we should appreciate that.
I see, it is interesting info,You know, actually, I got into this style of music at different times in my life. partly as a kid and partly in my teenage years through local music in my city and nearby villages, then later in my youth through movies and video games (heard more Western music). And more recently, in my middle age, I’ve gotten even more into it. I’ve even come to understand its structures so well that sometimes I compose music in these styles. It’s amazing that we have access to all these works, so we can learn the musical structures and styles of different countries. I really enjoy learning this kind of music.
I think I’ve seen one of your performances which was old western music, and you guys played it beautifully!
It’s awesome that even in today’s modern world, there are still people who love this style of music, and there are even festivals dedicated to it.
