Little voices, big hearts - A mini concert for Dad [ENG/SPA]

I had a wonderful experience today that I'd love to share. The institution where my youngest daughter studies invited me to a final celebration for Father's Day. It was a mini-concert where children from various grades would sing songs for their fathers to honor them. This was my first time participating in something like this; these activities are usually geared more towards mothers, so it was quite a surprise.

Hoy tuve una bonita experiencia que me gustaría compartir. Recibi de la institución donde estudia mi hija menor, la invitación a un agasajo final como celebracion del dia del padre, se trató de un mini concierto donde los niños de varios grados cantarían canciones para sus padres, a manera de honrarlos. Primera vez que participo en algo parecido, este tipo de actividades suelen estar más orientadas a las madres, así que fue toda una sorpresa.

This wasn't the only activity the school organized for fathers. For three weeks, they celebrated what they called "Father's Day." On the two previous Thursdays, our children gave us gifts along with some words of thanks for our role as fathers. It was simple but still very touching.

Esta no fue la única actividad que el colegio organizó para los padres, durante 3 semanas se estuvo celebrando lo que ellos llamaron el dia del padre, los dos jueves anteriores recibimos unos obsequios que nos eran entregados por nuestros hijos, junto a algunas palabras de agradecimiento por la labor que desempeñamos como padres, fue algo sencillo pero sin dejar de ser bastante emotivo.

As they themselves declared, they saved the best for last. This mini-concert, though it might seem small and simple, involved many hours of rehearsal and practice, with several groups of children performing different songs. All the groups that sang included several children with conditions that surely presented a challenge for the teachers when it came to learning and memorizing the songs. Nevertheless, everything turned out beautifully and was very moving.

Como ellos mismo lo declararon, dejaron el plato fuerte para el final. Este mini concierto aunque parece pequeño y sencillo, implicó muchas horas de ensayó y practica, varios grupos de niños emprendieron distintas canciones. Todos los grupos que cantaron cuentan con varios niños con condiciones que seguro resultaron un desafío para los docentes al momento de el aprendizaje y memorización de las canciones, sin embargo, todo salió muy bonito y fue muy emotivo.

All the songs were about dad. The youngest children accompanied their singing with mimes and beautiful gestures, inviting us to join in. Then, the slightly older children, with their more developed voices, delighted us with some beautiful songs that, I'm embarrassed to say, I didn't know. I honestly didn't realize there were so many songs dedicated to fathers. My daughter participated in the last group. As one of the oldest, she was in the second row, but since she was close to the microphone, I could distinguish her voice.

Todas las canciones hablaban sobre papá, los más pequeños acompañaban su canto con mímicas y bellos gestos invitándonos a que los acompañaramos. Luego los más grandecitos y sus voces más desarrolladas nos deleitaron con canciones muy bonitas, que me da vergüenza decir que no conocía, la verdad no sabia que hubieran tantas canciones dedicadas a los padres. Mi hija participó en el último grupo, por ser una de las más grandes quedó en la segunda fila, pero como estaba cerca del micrófono podía distinguir su voz.

The oldest children closed with "We Are The World," the song composed by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, but the Spanish version by Emilio and Gloria Estefan. This was the only song I knew, and those of us who've heard it before know its powerful message. I was very surprised by how well the children knew it, and I thought it was a perfect choice by the music teacher to select this song to convey the message to fathers that our children are the future of the world, and that we must give our best in raising them.

Los niños más grandes cerraron con la canción 'We Are The World' la canción compuesta por Michael Jackson y Lionel Richie, pero la versión en español por Emilio y Gloria Estefan, fue la única canción que si conocía, además quienes la hemos escuchado antes alguna vez sabemos de su potente mensaje. Me sorprendió mucho lo bien que se la sabían los niños, y me pareció que fue una selección perfecta por parte del profesor de música elegir este tema para dejar ese mensaje a los padres de recordar que nuestros hijos son el futuro del mundo, que hay que dar lo mejor de nosotros en su crianza.

So that's how it all ended. It was a beautiful activity to close out a week and a month in a spectacular way. Fathers aren't always honored like this, but as one of the teachers who led the event said, "Honor to whom honor is due." Surely some fathers don't fulfill their role well, but for those of us who strive our hardest, it was gratifying to feel honored.

Bueno asi cerro todo, fue una bonita actividad para cerrar una semana y un mes de forma espectacular. No siempre los padres son agasajados de esta manera, pero como decía uno de los profesores que dirigió el acto: honor a quien honor merece. Seguro habrá algunos que no desempeña bien su rol de padre, pero para quienes nos esforzamos al máximo, fue gratificante sentirnos honrados.
