Mi primera vez en una Plena, Conociendo la cultura Puertoriqueña 🇵🇷 💃
Sí, sin duda son almas cálidas y reconfortantes, puede que sea porque venimos del Caribe? Puede ser. Es muy común que acá se vean eventos de distintas clases, estamos en una Ciudad Capital MUY multicultural, cosa que me encanta, lo que si NUNCA había visto era este, llamado LA PLENA. Pero qué es una Plena?
En este lugar hermoso al que fui, nos explicaron un poco antes de comenzar todo, una breve historia de lo qué es y cómo comenzó este tradicional género musical. Y aunque dije que puede ser que nuestro carisma sea por lo sabroso de nuestro clima, es una mezcla entre Africanos y Españoles quienes comenzaron esto. Se originó en el siglo XX y la cantan narrando temas de actualidad cómo por ejemplo políticos, noticias, movimientos de protestas o comentarios satíricos.
Yes, they are certainly warm and comforting souls, maybe because we come from the Caribbean? Maybe. It's very common here to see events of different kinds, we are in a VERY multicultural Capital City, which I love, what I had NEVER seen was this one, called LA PLENA. So, what is a Plena?
In this beautiful place I went to, they explained to us a little bit before starting everything, a brief history of what it is and how this traditional musical genre started. And although I said that it could be that our charisma is because of our tasty climate, it is a mix between Africans and Spaniards who started this. It originated in the 20th century and is sung narrating current affairs such as politics, news, protest movements or satirical commentary.
Según la charla que nos dió el organizador, los primeros pleneros eran trabajadores de caña de azúcar que provenían del islas angloparlantes y se alojaban en el sur de la isla de Puerto Rico, especificamente en San Antón.
Lo utilizaban también como método informativo, hacían llegar algunas noticias o situacones a distintas regiones ya que habían muchisimos habitantes que no sabían leer y de esta manera se comunicaban.
A medida que avanzaba la clase, nos mostraron los instrumentos que utilizan para tocar, casi todos tambores de manos, y se utilizan 3 básicos que son los que no varían tanto: Requinto, seguidor y tumbador. Tuve la oportunidad de llevar el seguidor en una práctica y fue emocionante. La tarea más difícil la tiene el requinto que tiene que improvisar y le da esa emoción y ganas de mover el esqueleto a toda la Plena.
También se utilizan otros como la guitarra, maracas, acordeón, depende del gusto del Plenero y se toca en un compás de 2/4. Al momento de empezar a cantar y tocar, Me di cuenta que los coros o estribillos son muy básicos, eso sí, tienes que utilizar mucho tu memoria ya que el público es el que le da vida a la Plena mientras que los músicos se encargan de los instrumentos e ir improvisando los versos.
According to the talk given by the organizer, the first pleneros were sugar cane workers who came from the English-speaking islands and stayed in the south of the island of Puerto Rico, specifically in San Anton.
They also used it as an informative method, they made some news or situations reach different regions since there were many inhabitants who did not know how to read and in this way they communicated.
As the class progressed, they showed us the instruments they use to play, almost all hand drums, and they use 3 basic ones that do not vary so much: Requinto, seguidor and tumbador. I had the opportunity to take the seguidor in a practice and it was exciting. The most difficult task is the requinto that has to improvise and gives that excitement and desire to move the skeleton to the whole Plena.
Others are also used such as guitar, maracas, accordion, depending on the preference of the Plenero and it is played in a 2/4 time signature. When I started to sing and play, I realized that the choruses or refrains are very basic, but you have to use your memory a lot because the public is the one that gives emotion to the Plena while the musicians are in charge of the instruments and improvise the verses.
Es como estar en un concierto en primera fila, a veces salía un músico y mostraba algunos pasos para animar un poco el momento y era super cool. Creo que esta es una de las reuniones musicales que más me ha gustado y me declaro FAN de las Plenas, espero volver a asistir a muchas y conocer un poco sobre esta hermosa cultura Puertoriqueña. It's like being in a concert in the front row, sometimes a musician came out and showed some steps to liven up the moment and it was super cool. I think this is one of the musical gatherings that I liked the most and I declare myself a FAN of the Plenas, I hope to attend many again and learn a little about this beautiful Puerto Rican culture.
