Three Tune Tuesday: Mariah Carey Throwbacks

My aunt from up north came to Manila to celebrate her birthday with us. Of course, birthday celebrations in our family are never complete without karaoke. Most of my cousins are singers, and by that I mean they actually sing at weddings and events. So, you can imagine how lively the karaoke sessions get in our family.
Everyone was taking turns singing when suddenly the spotlight turned to me 😆
My aunt, the birthday celebrant, requested that I sing. She remembered how I used to grab the microphone all the time when I was a kid during family karaoke nights. But now? I have a little more self-respect 😆 I’d rather give the spotlight to my cousins. They’re the real singers, after all. I was perfectly happy just enjoying the night.
Then they started bringing up old memories. Memories like how my relatives used to attend school gatherings in place of my parents whenever they couldn’t make it because of work. They would even record videos of me singing, dancing, or doing whatever performance my teacher asked me to do. Looking back now, it’s actually really sweet and a little embarrassing too 😆
Suddenly, my closest cousin entered a song into the karaoke. Before I knew it, she handed me the microphone and told everyone that it was the song we used to practice together when I auditioned for our school choir many years ago.
And yes… it was a Mariah Carey song.
So for this TTT, I’ll be sharing a few Mariah Carey songs that hold special memories for me.

“Hero” is a single from Mariah’s third album Music Box. This song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 back in 1993. It’s an inspiring song about finding courage and strength during difficult times.
This was actually the song I chose when I auditioned for our school choir. My cousin and I practiced it together over and over again before the audition.

“Angels Cry” is a remixed single featuring Ne-Yo. I really love their collaboration here, probably because I also like Ne-Yo’s music 💛
This song reminds me of my high school days with my best friends. We used to sing this together all the time as if we could actually relate to the heartbreak in the song 😆
Actually… we still do whenever we have karaoke sessions and start reminiscing about the days when they would come over to my house “to study.” But in reality, we were just recording covers and uploading them on SoundCloud. Lol.

Aside from “Angels Cry,” this song will always be on our karaoke list whenever my friends and I get together.
“We Belong Together” is a single from Mariah Carey’s album The Emancipation of Mimi. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks, which is pretty crazy! This song also earned Mariah two Grammy Awards in 2006 for Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
No wonder it’s such a classic.

Love those! I am currently into Mariah's bye bye song, it hits hard during the holidays and I miss my grandmother.
I also love Bye Bye! If I end up doing another Mariah Carey TTT, that song would surely be on my list. It really hits differently, especially when you’ve lost someone dear to you 🥺
