I'd heard something about this film before and added it to my list, but like so many others, many years passed before I finally decided to see it, and I couldn't even remember what had caught my attention at the time, beyond the fact that it was a musical, something you can easily deduce from the promotional poster. And yes, of course it's a story centered around music, but it's also about love. And the love of music. And the music of love. And with this mix, nothing could go wrong.

Alguna vez oí algo de esta película y la apunté en mi lista, pero como con tantas otras, muchos años pasaron hasta que finalmente me decidí a verla y ni siquiera recordaba qué me había llamado la atención en su momento, más allá de que era una película musical, algo que puede deducirse fácilmente del poster promocional. Y sí, por supuesto que es una historia en cuyo centro está la música, pero también está el amor. Y el amor a la música. Y la música del amor. Y con esta mezcla, nada podía salir mal.

Once is not a musical in the vein of Les Miserables in which every dialogue is sung, or La La Land, with singing and dancing scenes, but rather in the style of Begin Again, because its protagonists make music, but without the funny scenes of comedies like Music & Lyrics. Once is a story of love and music, but it's a drama. In it we meet a man in his late thirties, a singer and songwriter, who - guitar in hand - performs songs on the streets of Dublin, when he's not working in his father's workshop repairing vacuum cleaners. During the day, he sings popular songs in exchange for tips, but at night he sings the songs he has composed himself and doesn't sing during the day because he believes people won't give him money in exchange for a song they don't know. One night a girl in her early twenties comes over to listen to him and honestly applauds him. She doesn't leave a big tip because she can't, since like him, she too struggles to make a living. From there on, there are some chance encounters and some voluntary ones, and we learn a little of their history. We learn that he's going through a painful breakup and that his ex left for London; she's an immigrant from the Czech Republic, selling flowers on the street and living with her mother. Neither has been lucky in love and both find some escape and solace in music because - surprise - she can also play an instrument - the piano - and likes to sing. So, the next logical and natural step is to share some of each other's music with each other and start singing and playing together.

Once no es un musical en la línea de Les Miserables en los que cada diálogo es cantado, o de La La Land, con escenas de canto y de baile, sino más bien del estilo de Begin Again, porque sus protagonistas hacen música, pero sin las escenas graciosas de comedias como Music & Lyrics. Once es una historia de amor y de música, pero se trata de un drama. En ella conocemos un hombre de más de treinta y tantos años, cantante y compositor, que - guitarra en mano - interpreta canciones por las calles de Dublín, cuando no está trabajando en el taller de su padre que repara aspiradoras. Durante el día, canta canciones populares a cambio de propinas, pero por la noche canta los temas que él mismo ha compuesto y que no canta durante el día porque cree que la gente no le dará dinero a cambio de una canción que no conocen. Una noche se acerca una chica de unos veintipocos años de edad a escucharlo y le aplaude con honestidad. No deja una gran propina porque no puede, ya que como él, ella también lucha para ganarse la vida. A partir de allí se dan algunos encuentros azarosos y otros voluntarios y vamos conociendo un poco de la historia de los dos. Nos enteramos de que él está atravesando una dolorosa ruptura y que su ex se fue a Londres; de ella nos cuentan que es inmigrante, llegada desde la República Checa, que vende flores en la calle y vive con su madre. Ninguno ha tenido suerte en el amor y ambos encuentran algo de escape y consuelo en la música porque - sorpresa - ella también sabe tocar un instrumento - el piano - y le gusta cantar. Entonces, el siguiente paso lógico y natural es compartir un poco de la música de cada uno con el otro y comenzar a cantar y a tocar juntos.

From there on, the story is not very different from others we've seen. The way the protagonists fall in love with each other, the idea of recording an album and making themselves known, the possibility of making a life together, are things we have seen in other movies, but Once has a special charm and that is its simplicity. The film, the script and the performances are honest and disarmingly simple. One can be sitting at home in front of the screen, but Once doesn't feel like a film product, but almost like one's own daily life, like one's own memories.

De ahí en adelante, la historia no es muy diferente de otras que hemos visto. La forma en que los protagonistas se van enamorando el uno de la otra, la idea de grabar un álbum y darse a conocer, la posibilidad de hacer una vida juntos, son cosas que hemos visto en otras películas, pero Once tiene un encanto especial y es su sencillez. La película, el guion y las actuaciones son de una honestidad y una simpleza que desarman. Uno puede estar sentado en su casa frente a la pantalla, pero Once no se siente como un producto cinematográfico, sino casi como la propia vida cotidiana de uno, como los propios recuerdos.

The way the film is shot is key to this perception of simplicity and closeness. There are more open shots and some close-ups, but many scenes occupy the close-up and moving shot, which makes you feel like you are there with them in the studio, in the park, on the bus. The script, of course, reinforces this simplicity. The writing is so simple - but so powerful - that the protagonists have no names, they are listed in the credits as Guy and Girl, because they don't need them: what matters is what they do. In addition, if this couple seems so close, so normal, almost as if they were not acting, it's because they're not actors, not professionals at least. Glen Hansard is a musician, leader of the Irish band The Frames and although in 1991 he appeared in The Commitments (BAFTA winning film) he didn't have an acting career when he starred in Once. Marketa Irglova wasn't an actress either; this was, in fact, her first role, and she, just like Girl, is also Czech and can also play the piano. So everything in the film is very indie, but realistic, very anti movie blockbuster, from the cinematography to the performances and of course the music, composed - moreover - by the protagonists themselves, Hansard and Irglova. Seen this way, in Once there is so much honesty and its content is so genuine, that it's almost a documentary with musicians playing musicians and composing the songs that they themselves must sing and play in the story, songs that by the way are beautiful and among which I found a great surprise.

La forma en que está filmada la cinta es clave en esta percepción de sencillez y cercanía. Hay planos más abiertos y algunos close-up, pero muchas escenas ocupan la toma cercana y en movimiento, lo que hace que uno sienta que está allí con ellos en el estudio, en el parque, en el bus. El guion, por supuesto, refuerza esta simpleza. La escritura es tan simple - pero tan poderosa - que los protagonistas no tienen nombres, figuran en los créditos como Guy y Girl (Chico y Chica), porque no los necesitan: lo que importa es lo que hacen. Sumado a ello, si esta pareja nos parece tan cercana, tan normal, casi como si no actuaran, es porque no son actores, no profesionales al menos. Glen Hansard es un músico, líder de la banda irlandesa The Frames y aunque en 1991 apareció en The Commitments (película ganadora del BAFTA) no tenía una carrera actoral al protagonizar Once. Marketa Irglova tampoco era actriz; este fue, de hecho, su primer papel, y ella, tal como Girl, también es Checa y también sabe tocar el piano. Así que todo en la película es muy indie, pero realista, muy anti superproducción de cine, desde la cinematografía hasta las actuaciones y por supuesto la música, compuesta - además - por los mismos protagonistas, Hansard e Irglova. Visto así, en Once hay tanta honestidad y su contenido es tan genuino, que es casi un documental con músicos que interpretan a músicos y que componen las canciones que ellos mismos deben cantar y tocar en la historia, canciones que por cierto son hermosas y entre las que me encontré con una gran sorpresa.

One of the things I like most about this kind of movies is to look up - after having seen them - the official soundtrack and add these random, not very well known songs to my playlists, so some time later I find myself listening to the songs over and over again and appropriating them like a treasure. But there's a scene in Once where a tune starts playing that I recognized right away, the song Falling Slowly. It's a beautiful ballad that I've known for many years and that I didn't know had been composed for this film by Hansard and Irglova and that the duo had won the Oscar for Best Original Song. It's a beautiful piece.

Una de las cosas que más me gusta de este tipo de películas es buscar - después de haberlas visto - el soundtrack oficial y agregar estas canciones random, no muy conocidas, a mis playlists, así que tiempo después me encuentro escuchando las canciones una y otra vez y me apropio de ellas como de un tesoro. Pero hay una escena en Once en la que empieza a sonar una melodía que reconocí enseguida, la canción Falling Slowly. Es una balada hermosa que conozco desde hace muchos años y que no sabía que había sido compuesta para esta película por Hansard e Irglova y que la dupla había ganado el Oscar a Mejor Canción Original. Es una preciosura de canción.

And as if all this wasn't romantic enough, there's more: Glen and Marketa fell in love in real life and had a relationship for three years (from 2006 to 2009) and launched a musical project called The Swell Season recording original songs and performing the songs from the movie on their two-year tour that ended up separating them. And this story, even more honest than Once because it was the very truth, was filmed in black and white in a documentary called like the band where they reflect on love and fame. I haven't been able to watch the documentary yet - I haven't found it anywhere - but of course I want to because just as they fell in love with each other, I fell in love with their story. The other thing I want to see are some of the other films by director John Carney, responsible not only for Once, but also Begin Again, a film with a memorable soundtrack that I love and a killer cast (Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, Hailee Steinfeld, Adam Levine, James Corden, CeeLo Green and Catherine Keener), Sing Street (which has been highly recommended to me), creator of the Modern Love series (another gem) and is currently working on Power Ballad, another musical story, with Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas, which I'm looking forward to. Y como si todo esto no fuese ya suficientemente romántico hay algo más: Glen y Marketa se enamoraron en la vida real y tuvieron una relación durante tres años (del 2006 al 2009) y lanzaron un proyecto musical llamado The Swell Season grabando canciones originales e interpretando las canciones de la película en su gira de dos años que terminó por separarlos.
