MUSIC AND LYRICS: Calum Scott's Dancing On My Own
It is one thing to listen to a song, and it is a totally different thing to understand the lyrics. I have always wanted to write about this topic, but I found myself doing this today, picking out just a song to analyze. I don't know if this is the same for everyone, but I think a song sounds different when you understand every word in its lyrics.
Some songs can naturally get you so carried away by the harmonies, melodies, and sweet notes that you don't even pay attention to the soul of the music. It just sounds so good, and you feel even better when you sing along. Let's get to the song of the day... "Dancing on my own" by Calum Scott.
The first time I heard this song, I was mesmerized by its entirety—it sounded too good and so sad at the same time ("This is my kind of music!", I thought to myself). I decided to add it to my playlist on Spotify immediately, and while listening, still not paying full attention to the lyrics, I felt there was something unusual about the song, but I didn't mind and just kept listening. This occurred again another time I was listening to the song, and I paid a little closer attention, and I had to ask myself if he was singing to a guy or a girl.
So, I am this kind of person who doesn't get obsessed with the personal lives of artists; I just want to enjoy their art and that is all. So, recently, the song popped into my head again, and this time, I really wanted to understand the lyrics and be sure of my observation. So, I observed two major things about this song; you might think they are quite obvious already, though.
First of all, it's a really sad song about heartbreak and how his partner found a new "friend", and he became invisible to him and eventually lonely. He found it so hard to move on; he had to stalk him maybe a few times to see how his new relationship was going. Two, the partner he was referring to is actually a guy, and that was the part that surprised me. I had to input my curiosity on Google, and boom, it was confirmed that the singer is gay.
I found that fascinating since I didn't know before, and I had to read up on him and even watch the official video of the song to see if it described the lyrics (sadly, it didn't at all). So, this new information has actually made the whole song more understandable for me.

This is a really beautiful song from a true and real artist, his voice is so magical and his lyrics hold meaning which makes the songs even nicer. If you never heard of him, you should definetely check him out and you should start with this song.
For me, this has become a series, so look forward to "MUSIC AND LYRICS" next sunday. Same account, any time of the day🙃
Thanks for reading❤️
I totally loved Dancing On My Own the first time I heard it. He first performer it on America's Got Talent, and that's where he became popular because he won a golden buzzer.
Just like you, I wondered if he was actually gay. But then, I found that the song was originally written by someone else, a woman. It didn't occur to me that he was gay, which explains why he didn't change the pronouns. Notwithstanding, it's a really beautiful song.
Oh wow, isn't this something? I didn't even know he wasn't the original owner of the song; he ate and left no crumbs. So, I had to check out the original version, and it was so good as well. Anywayyy, I am glad he kept the song in its original lyrics and didn't change a thing. I guess I will keep wondering if he sang the song because he could relate to it due to his sexuality or if he just loved the song and wanted to recreate it and it had nothing to do with his sexuality.
I don't know much about his sexuality. Quite frankly, I don't really care as the song is a really great song regardless.
By the way, I submitted this post for curation in a community I belong to. I felt it needed more eyes.
That is so nice of you, I really do appreciate that. Thank you very much
We learn new things everyday.i have listened to this song a thousand times but I didn't even notice he was singing about a guy and it is quite shocking to know he didn't write the song. He didn't write it!
Likkeeeee. I never knew he isn't the original owner, very shocking discovery.
