THE ORGAN OF CALVARY HOSPITAL CHAPEL, WAGGA WAGGA

Calvary Hospital was founded in 1926 by the Order of the Little Company of Mary as an offshoot of Lewisham Hospital situated in Sydney. An architecturally notable chapel, the Chapel of the Maternal Heart, was built between 1952 and 1954. This chapel showcases a distinctive Spanish Mission Romanesque style and features important stained glass windows crafted by the notable Sydney artist, Stephen Moor, who was born in 1915 and studied art history and stained glass at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest.

In 1968, S.T. Noad & Son provided the chapel with a pipe organ. Even with constrained resources, this instrument is celebrated for its bold sound in an acoustically pleasing environment. The organ, a modest three-rank extension instrument, has a few unique characteristics. These include a short-compass 4ft Principal rank beginning at Tenor F, a Claribel rank made of stopped wood, and a noticeable lack of couplers. In 1999, the instrument underwent cleaning and an overhaul under the supervision of Peter D.G. Jewkes.

The chapel is open daily from Monday to Friday with Mass at 8.00am.
