Petit Prélude sur deux thèmes grégoriens, Op. 172 | Supplication, Op. 170 - Jean Langlais

Jean Langlais composed some small pieces between 1956-1976 and published them separately. Editions-Delatour gave them a second life by compiling them into a 13 piece collection. The book contains:

  • Quatre Préludes, op.185
  • Petit Prélude sur deux thèmes grégoriens, op.172
  • Supplication, op.170
  • Six Petites Pièces, op.189
  • Deo Gratias, op. 107

Petit Prélude sur deux thèmes grégoriens, op.172
Composed in 1972, this small prelude calls upon two of the most popular Gregorian themes from the Catholic liturgy: "Jesus dulcis memoria" and "Ave Maris stella", melodies that Langlais was particularly fond of and which he used recurrently in his organ music. The registration is suggested as indicative; it depends on the instrument on which it is played.

Supplication, op.170
Composed on January 20, 1972, this colorful piece is dedicated to one of Jean Langlais's students, the blind Canadian organist John Vandertuin, who, as a young man, had come to work in Paris with him.
