The Science Behind Why We Get Songs Stuck in Our Heads

If not all over the world, but most especially in Nigeria, music has become our culture. It is hard for you to separate music from the Nigerian culture. So much of use case that music is been used for in my country ranging from parties, weddings, festivals, and other elaborate ceremony. Growing up, I always wonder why is it that we listen to a particular song and it seems it can't get away from our head any longer.

I believe I am not the only one that have been in that shoe before. Sometimes you will just listen to a line of a music and it stick in your head and sometimes you actually wonder why is it happening that you can't get the song out of your any longer. In Nigeria, we call it earworm. Well I dig deep to make research about it and I came up with some science facts to back it up which I want to share with us today.

Science makes me understand that why some songs just get struck in our head is because of the melody and the rhythm that comes with he song. Not only that, if the chorus is easy to remember and also can be related to what the person is facing presently in his or her life, it makes it easy for the song to get struck in your head. If the melody have a repeated melodic pattern also, it makes it easy for it to get glued to our brain.

Just as many of us actually know, our brain when it comes to music connects it with our mind. So when we are listening to music, our brain is sending signal to our mind to program which one to be accepted or not. If your mind pick that particular song probably due to toe sweet melody, the rhythm or probably because of the lyrics, it sends a signal back to our brain that this song is favourable to the listener, this now makes the brain to pick the song and make it struck in our head.

Apart from that, just like I said earlier, if the song has a strong emotional connection with the listener, it becomes easy for our brain to actually program it. You will testify that most song that have strong emotional connection with us stays much more. There are instances whereby I listen to a particular song and it gets glued in my head probably because the song was talking about the issue I was facing presently. If the song can relate to my present situation whether in terms of happiness or sadness, it makes the song get stuck in our head.

It is sometimes interesting to discover about some science facts about how somethings work. Growing up, I have usually wonder how it works but now growing up and with a better understanding and knowledge about it, I now fully understand how it works vividly. I also believe I have been able to help someone today to know something

Older by Sasha Sloan, has practically being in my head for months. And it has always being on my lips since then, I think no song has ever made its way into my head this long. You are certainly not the only one it happens to @consistency, and I love the fact that you were able to give us scientific backups on why it happens. It was nice reading through to the end bro
