Beer Can Tamborine

IMG_4001.jpg

Music has always been something I have loved. However, I have never had a talent for it. In this weeks topics for the #weekend-engagement we were askeed "Do you play a musical instrument?"

I have three older brothers that I grew up with. All three could play a musical instrument of some sort or another. One can play several instruments. I am the only one who never learned to play an instrument.

That is until one wonderful night sitting with family, while on leave from my military duties. As often was the case, when I would come home, we would gather together, my brothers and I. We would of course partake of adult beverages, and I would mostly drink beer.

Eventually after some talk, and a little too much drink, the instruments would come out and the singing would begin. Typically these would be old country or gospel songs (yeah drunks singing gospel), and folk music on occasion. We were a motley music crew and not the big hair band one either.

However, there was me, the odd man without an instrument, as usual that night. I was more like the crews roady. Fetching the occasional drink or if so blessed, another instrument. That is until my inebriated brain cells discovered the Beer Can Tamborine.

As the night rolled on I found myself tapping my beer can to the rhythm of the music and drinking along. I also noticed the noise the can made changed as the level of the beer decreased. Yes, that was it. I had discovered my instrument.

I took short tugs from the can, long tugs, all to change the tune of the Beer Can Tamborine as it clanged against the table. Yes, I had found my instrument.

As my brothers got ready to start playing the next song I interrupted. "Hold on, let me tune this thing." and I took a long swig off my can of beer, tapped it on the table and said, "Let's play."

This signified the official chritianing of the Beer Can Tamborine.

There haven't been many more occasions like that since. One of our brothers has passed away and so has our mother. She always enjoyed seeing her sons together making fools of themselves.

We have grown older, especially my brothers, I moved away. We don't get together like that anymore. The Beer Can Tamborine is out of practice, but I think it is time to make some calls, warm it up, and see if we got one more left in us.

What beautiful bitter sweet memories. Times like these will only remain in your heart now ,and on the chain of course. Maybe we all have our musical talent, just that you discovered yours a bit later in life

They are great memories. I am not sure if I would call it a musical talent, but I will go with it. LOL.

Ah these are key memories to keep. We don’t all have the same skills but we can figure out how to make do with what we’ve got. It sounds like you need to get some warm ups and the band back together!

Sweet memories Joe!

Your instrument is a real one, I've seen a concert where the lady used glasses filled with water as a musical instrument and the sound she managed to get out of these glasses was amazing.

Yes they really are wonderful memories.

Really? I just thought I was being silly. I will have to see if I can find something on YouTube like that.

No, it's not silly.

Here's one for example.

That is neat how you can make music with about anything. Thanks for sharing.

It is indeed. You're welcome my friend.

I've seen Italians have a long history of these homemade strange musical instruments, like using anything from the trash bin's lid to slippers. It's interesting.
