Music Work and Stress

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to talk a little bit about how music has really changed my ability to deal with stressful situations at work!

Music Work and Stress

One of the things that I've come to understand of myself lately, is when I'm in an intense situation, such as at work, I tend to prefer a particular style of music.

With the recent stresses and complications that have gone on at work lately, what I've been doing is trying to find different ways to concentrate and focus more intensely on the things that I'm doing since it requires quite a bit of mental capacity. I like the work for sure in many regards, but damn is it stressful lol. I also am trying to do all of this without relying on the crutch that gets floated in our faces that is allopathic medicine. There is no way in hell I am going to pay someone to give me something to work every day. That is counterintuitive to the millionth degree!

One of the things that I've enjoyed doing in the past few years while I'm working, since I've been working from home, is listen to podcasts and radio talk shows in the morning and throughout the day while I'm working. It provides me some background and alternative things to think and interact with while I'm trying to get my work done and provides a little bit of mental clarity in some form I suppose. That works pretty well as long as I'm doing normal work but when I have to really get my nose to the ground and concentrate on what I'm doing, this isn't something that's possible at all lol.

I've also noticed that when I'm in these moods or needs of intense work, the type of music that I listen to gets adjusted. In an intense bout of work where I need to really pay attention to what I'm doing, I have been leaning more towards electronic music like EDM or the more intense songs because of the various beats that they have in the songs. That was an interesting thought I recently realized, because I had on some alternative rock music and it wasn't working well for my mental needs because the lyrics were distracting me from what I was trying to pay attention and focus on which I found quite interesting lol.

I find it interesting but not surprising that this was the case, from reading and listening to various stories of the way that people like doctors prefer to listen to very specific things when doing surgery. I know that my work isn't on that level but when you need to get down to the seriousness of a task at work and can't mess around, you want to do whatever you can to be able to drive your attention to the specific task that you're undertaking. This is where the music choice I've got comes in and works out.

With listening to something like Rock music, country, rap and some others I tend to listen to the lyrics more than I should be, so I split my attention away from my work and put it onto the words if I like a song or something. With electronic music like EDM, artists like Skrillex, Deadmau5 and many others they are able to put beats together that I can listen to that hype me up for what I'm doing. Other times I like to listen to more mellow electronic music but lately that hasn't been the case as I've had quite a bit of stress, so hype music it is lol.

What are you listening to while you work? Do you prefer silence over music?

I love Skrillex! I found that genre while I was drilling hard to get through Systems and Signals, I think. I still fall back on that style of music when I really need to get some shit done.

Not exactly the same, and you probably either saw it or already know, but @sketch.and.jam posted about this band, El Ten Eleven - and I pretty much spent this whole week exploring a new world of music as a result. Here is the original post with his selections that got me started as well.

Anyway, good taste in work music man, I dig it!

Thanks for stopping by brother! I'm familiar with sketch but haven't seen that post yet! I'll give it a listen this weekend and see what it's all about!

I do love the style of skrillex for helping me get things done. It's pretty intense stuff lol. Glad I'm not the only one dude!

Gotta have my music for working. I listen to a little bit of everything other than gospel but if I really need to concentrate it's metal, particularly Metallica. Sometimes I run into the same 'lyrics are distracting' situation and then it's something like the Planets Suite or Vitamin String Quartet does Warren Zevon or those youtube videos of just John Frusciante guitar solos.

Have you listened to Tom Morello's Atlas Underground album? It's a fun mix of his guitar, rap, and edm. There's a couple tracks that are free of singing but most of it has vocals paired with edm. Knife Party, Bassnectar, Steve Aoki and a bunch of others are on there.

That's awesome no I didn't hear of that! Isn't that the dude from blink 182? Name sounds familiar lol I'll give that a listen this weekend as well!

Ah I'll have to try some metal! I recently started listening to bands like five finger death punch and enjoy it quite a bit but I'll see what I can try on that end! It's good to have wide tastes when it comes to music!

Ha, no, he was the guitarist for Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave, amongst other projects.

It's funny you mention five finger death punch, I was thinking of them when I was reading the bit about music without lyrics. I love their sound but can't say the same for their lyrics at all, wish I could get their stuff without lyrics, it'd be great working music. Wide tastes a nice, until it comes time to decide on what to listen to :)

Ah that’s right he was in rage lol I knew it sounded familiar!

Tell me about it, when I’m getting ready for work I have a tough time getting the right songs lined up lol

I get this! I discovered that the kind of music makes a big difference for me too.
When I need to focus and tap into my creativity, I play some moody sounds of nature or Tibetan Bells. They put me in a zone of total relaxation that helps my brain to focus and be alert. At other times I'll need upbeat music if I don't need extreme focus. Anyway, I know that music is my go-to thing for all situations:)

That’s great! I think I may have heard Tibetan bells but not positive on that yet. I’ll have to give it a listen! It might unlock a key focus method for me which would be cool!

Listening to the sounds of nature is definitely a great way to be able to focus, it’s very relaxing for sure! Unless you’re trying to sleep and the birds are going ballistic outside your window.. ya that is my situation in the mornings in the spring hahaha there’s some trees right outside our window and keeping the window open guarantees they wake you up at 5am when they wake up and start yapping. I digress though :D

I've always had difficulty focusing, maybe they would call it ADHD, haha! and the bells work a charm!

Unless you’re trying to sleep and the birds are going ballistic outside your window

I love birds, but for Christ's sake, I had that problem with birds in the Philippines and just could not sleep. I wanted to kill them all 🤣

Hahaha glad I’m not the only one who wants to set fire to the tree they are hanging out in to get them away. Noisy little shits! Lol

Funny what works for different people at different times. Years and years ago I couldn't work without having the radio on in the office, now I can't stand it. Talking and lyrics are distracting and I need all my brain cells to do my work - LOL. Though for some of it, I am considering electronic music with few vocals to drown out the office noise when I have to be in the office (two days a week).
When I am doing my art I am always having something in the background. Twitch, music, something it doesn't distract me but puts me at ease to get my creative juices going.

p.s. John Frusciante = Red Hot Chili Peppers 🌶
