A Magical Morning (eng-esp)

During my stay in the city of Santa Clara, thanks to the Santa Clara Canta choral music festival, I had the opportunity to enjoy a morning full of music, learning and art in a general way. It was a Thursday morning, and the appointment was at the art gallery downtown. Two central events of the festival took place there, the learning of common singing and a vocal technique workshop.

How did this work out?

First of all, the teacher Nelys Cañizares directed a vocalization in a general way, which served to paste the voices in the same sound, since Cuban choirs have different ways of interpreting and it became necessary to win in union.

Then we started the assembly process of the work "Song with Everyone", original music by César Isella with choral arrangement by Vivián Tabbush. Here the work required a soloist, a role that was given to the teacher Maria Felicia Pérez. In addition, we had guitar and snare accompaniment. Although I'm not an expert at reading music it was quite easy to follow the general melody, and the song was easy for us to learn. Half an hour later the play was ready to be performed, but we still continued rehearsing a couple of times.

As of ten o'clock in the morning we had already finished, and the second part of the morning schedule was given way, the vocal technique workshop with the teacher Grisel Lince. Teacher Grisel is currently a professor at the Higher Institute of Art, so I was very excited to receive this class.

The workshop was dedicated to talking about all our phonator apparatus, from the physiological part to the tricks and skills that we must develop to sing correctly and increasingly better. It was something very comprehensive in terms of information, but thanks to the tireless work of my director I was already adapted to many of the terms that Teacher Grisel explained. What I liked the most were the placement exercises that we did, because no theory is valid if it is not put into practice. Both me and my colleagues enjoyed this time very much.

I also took some time to look at the gallery. All the works showed airs of the contemporary, with a lot of boldness and daring despite the techniques used by each artist. Unfortunately I didn't have time to photograph them all due to the busy festival schedule.

Anyway, I was very happy that morning. It was something completely magical.

Durante mi estadía en la ciudad de Santa Clara, gracias al festival de música coral Santa Clara Canta, tuve la oportunidad de disfrutar una mañana llena de música, aprendizaje y arte de manera general.

Fue una mañana de jueves, y la cita fue en la galería de arte del centro de la ciudad. Allí sucedieron dos eventos centrales del festival, el aprendizaje del canto común y un taller de técnica vocal.

¿Cómo funcionó esto?

Primeramente la maestra Nelys Cañizares dirigió un vocalizo de manera general, lo que sirvió para empastar las voces en un mismo sonido, ya que los coros cubanos tenemos maneras distintas de interpretar y se hacía necesario ganar en unión.

Luego comenzamos el proceso de montaje de la obra "Canción con Todos", música original de César Isella con arreglo coral por Vivián Tabbush. Aquí la obra exigía una solista, papel que le fue otorgado a la maestra Maria Felicia Pérez. Además, tuvimos acompañamiento de guitarra y caja. Aunque no soy experto leyendo música fue bastante fácil seguir la melodía general, y la canción nos resultó fácil de aprender. Media hora después ya la obra estaba lista para presentarse, pero aún así continuamos ensayando un par de veces.

A partir de las diez de la mañana ya habíamos terminado, y se le dio paso a la segunda parte de la programación de la mañana, el taller de técnica vocal con la maestra Grisel Lince. La maestra Grisel es actualmente profesora en el Instituto Superior de Arte, así que estaba muy emocionado por recibir esta clase.

El taller estuvo dedicado a hablar sobre todo nuestro aparato fonador, desde la parte fisiológica hasta los trucos y habilidades que debemos desarrollar para cantar correctamente y cada vez mejor. Fue algo muy abarcador en cuanto a información, pero gracias al incansable trabajo de mi director ya estaba adaptado a muchos de los términos que la maestra Grisel explicó. Lo que más me gustó fueron los ejercicios de colocación que realizamos, porque ninguna teoría es válida si no se lleva a la práctica. Tanto yo como mis compañeros disfrutamos mucho este tiempo.

También me tomé un tiempo para contemplar la galería. Todas las obras mostraban aires de lo contemporáneo, con mucha osadía y atrevimiento a pesar de las técnicas que usaba cada artista. Lamentablemente no tuve tiempo de fotografiarlas todas debido al apretado programa del festival.

De todas maneras, fui muy feliz esa mañana. Fue algo completamente mágico.
