We need a good change
I was discussing with one of my friends in the office yesterday on how everything within the school system has changed. As a younger man than myself said, it is normal for change to occur and that means we're getting somewhere and I think he was right.
Nowadays it pretty much baffles me to see young secondary school students who were caught in immoral activities within the school premises most especially in their hostels and I wonder. Do the parents of children like this know of this behavior before letting them off to school.
Back in the days especially in the early 2000 children were far more better behaved and well dressed than what we see in today's community. Just last night as I was watching videos on Facebook I saw a video which portrays secondary school students in their uniform who were dancing.
Both the young boys and the young girls pulled off the shirts which I could clearly identify as their school uniform and you see these children almost naked and dancing.
The young girls aren't even ashamed dancing in public with bodies exposed.
This led me to search for waec on Facebook to know what is actually going on. If this was just for a school or if other secondary schools were hosting their students like that. When I checked I was able to find even more videos where more secondary students, especially those who had just finished their exams were dancing in a very wayward manner.
Things weren't like this early, especially in this city I thought to myself but then I made one remarkable observation and I found out that the students which I saw were all in the same uniform. That is to say that all the videos which I had seen and watched were all recorded in the same school.
I was a little bit relieved when I made this observation but then I feel something has to be done to curb this kind of exhibition or rather celebration before it gets too late. If the school weren't sanctioned for allowing such to take place within the school premises, it wouldn't be surprising to see more schools create more platforms for such uncoordinated celebrations to take place.
Though there may be some brilliant students among them, as a teacher I know there are schools who offer money for teachers and external invigilators to stay calm during exam supervision.
I've been to many schools like this where sometimes all it takes for the students to do well in their exams is to use money and shut the mouth of invigilators l then start writing answers to all the exam questions on the board. I'm among them who believe this practice is more hurtful to not just the students who will later be faced with such problems in future to solve even in their higher institution but hurtful to the teachers also whose good reputation is thrown to the dust. It is also possible that the students won't be proud of them as from the day reality hits them and they start witnessing the consequences of their actions.
I honestly hope for a change in the education sector of my country and I pray it's a good change that will come. A serious awakening.
