The Popper Project

avatar

Its been a while since I've actually practiced the cello and so I decided to take on a year long project to not only push myself to practice more but also refine my audio engineering skills. I'm hoping to finish this project by the end of 2023 but it may or may not take longer depending on how busy my work schedule is.

My 15 year old copy of Popper 40 Studies, High School of cello playing Op. 73

The Popper project will be a full set of recordings of every etude from Popper's 40 studies of cello playing. This collection of etudes is one of the most used set of etudes for cellists of every level. Commonly used to improve technique for budding cellists, it dives into every facet of basic cello technique. Refining and developing technical skills that support and build the foundation for any performing cellist.

I will also be using this project to work on recording/editing myself and refining my audio engineering skills. I will be sharing the editing process and would love feedback from any fellow audio engineers regarding any step in the process.

David Popper

David Popper was a bohemian cellist and composer who lived from 1843-1913. Born in Prague, he would go on to study at the Prague Conservatory and have a incredible performance career, becoming one of the major performing cellists of his time. His prolific career brought him in contact with many of the prominent composers during his time like Brahms, Liszt, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky. He was later appointed as a professor at Liszt's academy in Budapest, where he would start his teaching career. From there he would create his legacy as one of the great cello teachers. He was also a prolific composer of cello music, writing a ton of music ranging from chamber to show pieces. But regardless of all that, his most well known work is his High School of cello playing Op. 73 that has been played by basically every advance cello student alive. no cap.
