La esencia original // The original essence

Sé que ha muchos les ha pasado que al cantar una canción enseguida alguien asienta de que no cantas igual que al intérprete original mientras otros incluso cuestionan tu calidad para hacerlo. De hecho, si llegas a ser muy bueno para esto automáticamente vienen las comparaciones que suelen ser bastante odiosas porque siempre te llevan a que alguien es mejor que tú. Pero, ¿Por qué comparar? Al fin y al cabo todos somos diferentes y particulares por lo que sería imposible poder hacer lo mismo que otra persona de manera perfecta. En palabras simples, no puedes pedirle a alguien algo que es totalmente imposible.

Puedes seguir un legado de algún otro cantante, pero no hay peor error que pensar que puedes hacerlo igual que él. Obviamente habrá diferentes estilos y habilidades de cantos que no te hacen mejor que los demás sino que te da la oportunidad de brillar con luz propia. Y es que de manera razonable sería hasta un poco aburrido que todos los cantantes estuvieran en un mismo nivel de potencia, composición o calidad. Si bien en cada género hay estandartes que han dejado su huella, realmente no tendría sentido comparar para valorar o creer que al no parecerte a un artista determinado entonces no tienes la oportunidad de destacar en base a tus propios talentos.

I know that many of you have experienced that when you sing a song, someone immediately points out that you don't sing like the original artist, while others even question your ability to do so. In fact, if you become very good at this, comparisons automatically come up, which are often quite unpleasant because they always lead you to believe that someone else is better than you. But why compare? After all, we are all different and unique, so it would be impossible to do the same thing as someone else perfectly. In simple terms, you can't ask someone to do something that is totally impossible.

You can follow in the footsteps of another singer, but there is no worse mistake than thinking you can do it just like them. Obviously, there will be different singing styles and abilities that don't make you better than others, but give you the opportunity to shine in your own right. And it would be a little boring if all singers were at the same level of power, composition, or quality. While there are standards in each genre that have left their mark, it really wouldn't make sense to compare in order to evaluate or believe that if you don't resemble a certain artist, then you don't have the opportunity to stand out based on your own talents.

Estas palabras vienen de un pequeño racionamiento al saber una noticia no tan reciente pero que pone fin a una contienda mediática entre dos cantantes: Amaia Montero y Leire Martínez, vocalistas destacadas del grupo La oreja de van Gogh. Después de muchos años Amaia regresa a esta agrupación aunque parece que nunca se fue por lo mucho que fue extrañada por los fans de este grupo musical. Al parecer, Leire tuvo que cargar con esa tarea de seguir algo que Amaia había forjado por mucho tiempo algo tan especial que se convirtió para Leire en un rol difícil de asumir y que a muchos no les permitió ver el talento de esta mujer.

Admito que mi gusto musical por la oreja de van Gogh empezó cuando estaba Amaia, pero aún con Leire seguía disfrutando de las canciones de este grupo. No había razón ni motivo de comparación y más allá de exigirle a Leire o a cualquier otra cantante asumir el papel que había dejado Amaia, creo que lo más sabio es disfrutar de ellas y ver que de manera individual cada una de ellas puede dejar su propia huella sin opacar ni rebajar la calidad de la otra. ¿Son dos historias diferentes en el caso de este grupo musical? Por supuesto que sí, y no somos jueces para afirmar de manera categórica que una es mejor que otra. No hay una respuesta absoluta en este sentido y por lo tanto no veo como algo productivo ni positivo pasarnos gran parte de nuestro tiempo conteniendo sobre quien es mejor que quien.

These words come from a small reflection on some not-so-recent news that puts an end to a media feud between two singers: Amaia Montero and Leire Martínez, prominent vocalists of the group La Oreja de Van Gogh. After many years, Amaia returns to this group, although it seems as if she never left, given how much she was missed by the band's fans. Apparently, Leire had to take on the task of continuing something that Amaia had forged over a long period of time, something so special that it became a difficult role for Leire to assume and that prevented many from seeing this woman's talent.

I admit that my musical taste for La Oreja de Van Gogh began when Amaia was there, but even with Leire, I continued to enjoy the band's songs. There was no reason or motive for comparison, and beyond demanding that Leire or any other singer take on the role that Amaia had left behind, I think the wisest thing is to enjoy them and see that individually, each of them can leave their own mark without overshadowing or diminishing the quality of the other. Are these two different stories in the case of this musical group? Of course they are, and we are not judges to categorically state that one is better than the other. There is no absolute answer in this regard, and therefore I do not see it as productive or positive to spend much of our time debating who is better than whom.

Obviamente esto es solo para hacer referencia a algo que suele pasar no solo en el ámbito musical sino también en muchos escenarios de la vida, como si tuvieras que amoldarte a algo o alguien para poder destacar. Ser diferente también es ser original y eso es algo que está al alcance de todos. Nunca será justo etiquetar a alguien por algo que no tiene ni mucho menos podemos menospreciar su valor porque no se parezca o diga un modelo ya establecido por parte de otro. A lo largo de la historia muchos se han salido de ciertos guiones y patrones dejando como resultado el producto de un talento inesperado. Desde mi punto de vista, en el mundo de la música hay cabida para que todo cantante pueda brillar desde lo que tiene y sin pensar en lo que otros puedan tener. La esencia de lo original está en cada uno de nosotros y está en nuestras manos el poder mostrar nuestro talento con total libertad.

Obviously, this is just to refer to something that often happens not only in the music world but also in many other areas of life, as if you had to conform to something or someone in order to stand out. Being different also means being original, and that is something that is within everyone's reach. It will never be fair to label someone for something they don't have, much less belittle their value because they don't look or speak like someone else's established model. Throughout history, many have broken away from certain scripts and patterns, resulting in the product of unexpected talent. From my point of view, in the world of music there is room for every singer to shine with what they have, without thinking about what others may have. The essence of originality is in each of us, and it is in our hands to show our talent with complete freedom.
