Don Jazzy once said in an interview that getting even one artist ready to become mainstream would cost nothing less than 100 million. They'd still have to take care of feeding, transportation, clothing, management, health, and in some cases, family. All this will be handled by the label and the job of the artists is simply to churn out good songs. Hence, the disparity in the split. Hell, if you see 70/30, the label is even being very generous.
This is why most artists only deliver their best songs while they're in a label, because once they're on their own and they have to think of all these things, creativity would be hampered. So, if you don't have the money to push and handle yourself, it would be really difficult!

Don't forget that, it also depends on the type of contracts you sign.
