#ThreeTuneTuesday: Wild Horses

As you probably know by now, my wife and I recently took a trip to Louisville, KY for a little Spring Break getaway. It was a bit heart breaking to hear that there was yet another mass shooting yesterday. Even more shocking that it was just a handful of blocks away from where @mrsbozz and I stayed when we were down there.

In honor of Louisville and as you can see our recent drive by the infamous Churchill Downs (home of the Kentucky Derby), I decided to go with a horse theme for this weeks #threetunetuesday instituted by @ablaze.

IMG20230402155849.jpg

Churchill Downs was actually not what my wife and I expected. We decided to swing by the facility on our way back from our journey on the Bourbon Trail. You might expect that Chruchill Downs would be set in the rolling hills of Kentucky. That isn't the case at all. The best way I can describe it is Chruchill Downs is kind of in the ghetto. It's just past the airport an the Louisville University Stadium in the middle of the city.

I have no doubt that it wasn't always that way. I am sure urban sprawl has something to do with the current surroundings of the complex, but it is a bit of a shock to see where it is.

IMG20230402155855.jpg

The complex is actually pretty massive. I guess that makes sense when you consider it is built around a mile long racetrack. We had every intention of taking a tour of the facility, but when we saw that you had to pay just to park, we decided against it. It had already been a long day and since there were no races taking place on that day, we settled for just driving by and taking the three photos you see above.

I would love to visit the track one day for an actual race. I have heard the Kentucky Derby is one of the greatest sporting events to attend. I just need to lose a little weight first so I can wear a proper suit. Maybe make a little more money too so I can buy @mrsbozz a proper hat for the event!

Anyway, on to the music! Keeping with my theme of the week, I felt it was only right to include this classic by the Rolling Stones. I will always have an affinity for the original version of the song, but I have to admit, the cover by Sarah McLachlan used in the movie "Fear" with Mark Whalberg and Reese Witherspoon (as well as Alyssa Milano) was really well done.

You also might want to check out the version The Sundays did sometime.

It's just a really great moody song. If she hasn't already, I think Lana Del Rey would do a perfect cover of this song.

U2 has been a staple in my listening rotation since early in my teen years. I remember I purchased Achtung Baby new, but I had a used copy of Joshua Tree that I had purchased from the record store. In addition to that, I had a cassette copy of Zooropa. That's because back then cars didn't have CD players yet, so you often had CD's that you played at home and cassettes that you played in your car.

In any event, I am actually a bit surprised I didn't wear out Achtung Baby and had to buy a new copy. That's how much I played this album on my first CD player. You would probably laugh to hear I likely paid over $200 for that player. It took mowing a lot of lawns to be able to afford it.

Anyway, Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses is one of my very favorite songs from the album. There really isn't a bad song on the whole thing, but this one really stands out for me. Especially today given the theme of this post!

Finally, I felt it was only right to include this song by the iconic band know simply as "The Band". If you give it a listen you will realize by the second verse why I had to include this song.

The Band is one of those groups that you probably know some of their songs by you never really knew who they were. They have a lot of songs that many people have covered over the years. You also might consider them one of the first super groups before that was really a thing. Not only did they have some talented artists, they also had some impressive song writing talent too.

Believe it or not from 1965 to 1967 they were actually the back up band for none other than Bob Dylan.

Two of the most well known members of The Band are Levon Helm and Robbie Robertson. If you are interested, you can find out more about them on this Wiki page. I have a copy of their greatest hits on CD and it got a lot of play time back when I actually listened to CD's! :)

That's my #threetunetuesday for you. I hope you enjoyed!

Ah great trip! Brings me back to my trips to Louisville and Knoxville for business and also my trips to the Knob Creek gun show! Is suppose not a great time to bring up firearms but it really was fun to do some target practice with people safely using them and sharing constructive knowledge.

Reminds me I need to take another trip on the winding bourbon trail 🥃. Perhaps listen to your soundtrack too!

I did make a stop at the Jim Beam Distillery on our way back from Maker's Mark. That one is easy since it is right off 65 there. That gun show sounds awesome. I used to go to a gun club and shoot trap. I agree with you about how fun it can be when you are responsible and everything! I think if I ever make it back that way I want to head over to Frankfort and the Buffalo Trace distillery. I actually had more fun on the trail than in Louisville.

Oh man I love me some Buffalo Trace. Not too expensive and available way up here too!

The surprising distillery to me was 4 Roses! It was swill when I had it back in the day but the newer ownership and the amazing vintages they have were some of the best. Great distillery tour too!

I didn't do the tour at Four Roses, but I stopped in and grabbed a T-Shirt and a bottle. It looked like a pretty cool place! I have a bottle of single barrel select at home that I have been enjoying.

I would really love to go to Churchill Downs and see some racing. I've caught some on TV and if I could understand the US betting system, I would even put a few bets on! lol Great choice of tunes, I really only listened to the RollingStones one before.

I'd like to make it back there with some more time and more money at some point. I've never been to a horse race before, but it seems like it would be fun. Maybe not for the horses though.

You know, I never got into U2. Not sure why. They drifted into my life several times over the years but I never latched on to them. I'll have to dive in one of these days. That was a good song!

I recommend sticking to their earlier stuff or the stuff they did in the 90's, 2000's.

So many cases of mass shooting these days and it is so alarming.
I want you and your wife to please stay safe. Just make sure that you try to be safe.

Yeah, it was pretty shocking. We probably wouldn't have been down in that location even if we had been there, but still quite scary.

Sounds like it was a former bank employee who was upset. They went into the bank with an assault rifle.

Yes, more gunshots, it's so sad 😣

I heard the Kentucky Derby is one of the major races as well, so if we both heard it, then it must be true 😉

Yeah, it is the first race of the triple crown I am pretty sure. I've seen pictures on Facebook of friends who have went there and it looks fun.

We have yet to see Churchill downs as well. I am not into horse racing so I don;t really care that much about seeing it I guess either. Plus I am not into taking the chance of getting mugged or shot on my way there.

I have a feeling you are pretty safe if you park in the paid area. They have security and stuff. I stopped at a gas station to fill up and it wasn't that scary. It's still a pretty run down part of town though.

As you probably know by now, my wife and I recently took a trip to Louisville, KY for a little Spring Break getaway. It was a bit heart breaking to hear that there was yet another mass shooting yesterday.

Heart breaking. What will it take for meaningful gun control to become normal in America? So many shootings and so much death and so many, especially these mass shootings completely preventable. It makes me very sad to see life snuffed out like this.

I enjoyed your theme for the week in recognition of the Kentucky Derby, I would imagine that would be a great sporting event to attend man, some day you will get there. I am not into horse racing really, but I would still like to go to Cheltenham, as it is meant to serious craic altogether.

U2, Rolling Stones and The Band - great trio there auld stock, good on ya.

Yeah, I was pretty happy with this one. I don't know about the whole gun control thing. I own them, and I think it is worth a try, but I don't know if it will fix anything. It's definitely more of a mental health issue, but putting money towards that isn't as much of a priority I guess. I hope to make it to the derby one day!

Make it happen man, nothing stopping ye, hopefully tickets aren't too hard to come by. Something I'd love to get to some day is the Masters at Augusta, but tickets are nearly impossible to come by at a reasonable cost.

Regarding the Guns, Jim Jefferies does a great stand sketch on it and he actually makes some very good points. Well worth your time if you get a chance.

I have heard the masters is pretty cool. I've also heard the Indy 500 is the same kind of feel. Maybe because they only happen once a year? My in-laws live near a course where they have a golf tournament every year. The whole town basically gets taken over. It's crazy. I will watch the sketch. Thanks for sharing!

Indy 500 would be another cool one to go to and ya the one time annually bit probably has something to do with it and all the history around it.

I will watch the sketch. Thanks for sharing!

No problem, it's funny but actually, he makes some very good points around gun control too in my opinion.
