#threetunetuesday: New Yacht Rock

avatar

It's hard to believe another week has passed and it is time for another #threetunetuesday post again sponsored by @ablaze. I've really been enjoying these posts and sharing a few songs with you each week. I hope that every now and then I am giving you something new and exciting to check out.

Last week I took a deep dive into the Yacht Rock genre. If you aren't familiar with that term it is basically pop music from the late 70's and early 80's that has a high production quality and a very smooth feel.

The Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, America, Ambrosia, Little River Band, Poco, and many more are all examples of this genre.

Last week I also mentioned that there are some new kids on the block. Current bands and artists who are embracing the Yacht Rock vibe and churning out new and exciting music for those fans of the style.

That is what I am going to share with you this week. Three Tunes hand picked by me from the new generation of Yacht Rock.

Are you ready?

One of the most well known artists in the new Yacht Rock space is Young Gun Silver Fox. They have been putting out music officially since 2015 and they have four full albums under their belt as well as some EP's.

As you listen to the song you can definitely feel that smooth groove that is synonymous with Yacht Rock. They also have some hits of funk and jazz. This song that I shared in particular reminds me a lot of Bozz Skaggs.

Another really good song by them that you should check out is called "Mojo Rising". I highly recommend you check that song out if you aren't sold after listening to "West Side Jet" above.

It looks like the band has some new music that they have released in 2023, so that could me there is a new album on the way.

Where are all my Swedish people at? State Cows was actually the first modern Yacht Rock band to come on my radar. If I had to guess, I was listening to Spotify and after some of the old Yacht Rock finished playing, the algorithm threw some of the new stuff my way.

I'm so glad it did!

State Cows have a definite Yacht Rock feel. The lead singer even has a voice that harkens back to Kenny Loggins and someone else that I can't quite put my finger on now. The vocals are just so crystal clear and smooth.

Their self titled album came out in 2010, but they are still making music today. With over four full albums under their belt, I highly recommend you check them out. My best advice is start at the beginning and work your way through. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Finally, I just had to include Mayer Hawthorne in this list. He has been on my radar for quite some time now, I actually feel he is a bit more new soul or funk that Yacht Rock, but there is a lot of crossover between the two, so you can't really complain.

It's actually some of that drifting in and out of genres that I really enjoy about the Yacht Rock sound. As always, the production quality and the vocals are always smooth as butter.

Mayer has music on Spotify as far back as 2009, so there is a ton of stuff your you to check out there. Trust me, it is worth it!

Finally, if you are looking for some more New Yacht Rock to check out, I've included a link to a Spotify playlist that someone created. You might even notice there is a song by Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, and Thundercat on there!

Even if you don't like all the music, there is likely at least one artist you will enjoy in the Yacht Rock genre. I hope this clears things up for those of you who weren't sure exactly what this type of music encompasses.

Until next week!

I've never heard the phrase Yacht Rock before - thanks for introducing me to that and to some new artists that I can explore! I'm so bad at discovering new music on my own. It's one of the reasons I love Three Tune Tuesdays!

Yeah, this has been a great initiative. Especially since we get music from all over the world. Some of that European stuff is fire!

Hadnt heard of any of these guys before. Quite like State Cows and the young guns silver fox tune.
I checked state cows out on spotify and that tune doesnt even get into their popular list - a lot of their other tunes are not unlike steely dan actually. Pretty cool !

Wasn't expecting that last one! They are terrible shots. Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn! hehehehe. All cool jams, but that first video with mario bros vibe was cool to me for some reason. Thanks for the intro into this genre.

Yeah, I liked that one as well. I think the last one was supposed to be a play on Mr. And Mrs. Smith. Who knows though. Mayer is from Michigan if I recall correctly. His stuff is so good.

That first tune has a really nice groove. I enjoyed that.

The second was giving me serious 80s vibes. That song could work for the montage of any 80s movie. At times I got flashes of Culture Club. I really dug it.

The third was just ok, but that video was wild.

Yeah, I probably should have picked a different song for the third one. It seems a lot of people couldn't get past the video. Hawthorne really is worth checking out.
