#threetunetuesday: Dead Sara and other Delights

Welcome back to another Three Tune Tuesday. This is a really great initiative started by @ablaze where fellow members of Hive share three songs each week. They don't need to be related, but I like to have some sort of theme. It just helps me write more I think.

It's easy to just drop three songs into a post and call it a day, but explaining why you picked those three songs really adds a little something extra to your blog I think.

This week, my inspiration was bands or singers that I have only recently discovered. I remember the days of short wave radios and how if the weather was just right, you could get stations from all over the world. Those days are long behind us and now we have virtually any type of music we want at our fingertips.

What an amazing world we live in!

In addition to that, we also have artificial intelligence and algorithms introducing us to new music based on those tried and true tunes that we know and love.

My title this week was inspired by the Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass album below:

I own a copy of this album myself. Heck, I think just about anyone who collects records has a copy of this album. Whether they actually like the style of music or not. It's pretty iconic.

Oddly enough, the jazz music on this album is a far cry from what I am going to show you today. I just liked the way the title sounded.

So let's get to it!

Dead Sara just came on my radar a couple of days ago even though they have been around since 2002 or so. It's one of those deals where I was listening to something else and when that album finished up, Spotify thought I might enjoy this.

Believe it or not, it was right. It is a little scary how good the algorithm is for Spotify sometimes. "Weatherman" is one of the biggest hits that Dead Sara has, though it probably isn't my favorite song by them.

When I first heard them the lead singers voice kind of reminded me of Grace Potter, but they have hints of Queens of the Stoneage, and even The White Stripes going on too. It's just a mix of some good rock music. I've added most of their albums to my regular rotation now.

Their latest album was released in 2021, but I highly recommend you go all the way back to their self titled debut album and start at the beginning. You won't regret it!

Gaslight Anthem has actually been on my radar for quite some time now. They are another band that I was introduced to via that magnificent Spotify algorithm. They have been around just about as long as Dead Sara having been formed in 2006.

They hail from New Jersey and quite honestly, that should tell you all you need to know. Shout out to my Bon Jovi people out there, you know what I am talking about.

It was really just chance that I picked the particular song above. I could have picked any of them really and it would have been a good choice. They are just a good solid rock band. They actually remind me a lot of The Killers who started in 2001, so it isn't crazy to assume they may have taken some inspiration from them.

The band took a break starting in 2015, but they have since gotten back together and are playing music full time again. They area a really great group of artists and I highly recommend you check them out. It might not blow your socks off, but it will definitely be a reliable solid groove.

Wilder Woods is another one that just recently came on my radar like Dead Sara. The guys name is actually Bear Rinehart and he used to be the lead singer of a band called Needtobreathe. I was listening to the Sirius/XM station The Spectrum when the song above came on and I immediately fell in love.

There is something about his voice that I really dig. It reminds me a lot of Nathaniel Ratliff in this song. There is something about this "old soul" sound that really gets me in the gut. I've been working to find as many artists as I can lately to fit that bill. Anderson East, Nathaniel Ratliff, and Leon Bridges are just a couple that hit that spot.

His stage name is actually a combination of his sons name (Wilder and Woods). According to Wikipedia anyway. If you like this style of music, I suggest you check out more of his stuff. It's really good.

Finally, I have one bonus track for you:

Hook, Line & Sinker by Royal Blood came on my radar because it was on a TV show that I was watching. Amazon Prime does this really cool thing where if you pause a show they will tell you what actors are on the screen at that point and what song is playing in the background.

That's how I found this song.

I'm so glad I did. Royal Blood has become another staple in my playlist rotation. Hook, Line & Sinker was immediately added to my campfire tunes playlist even though it is a bit harder than some of the other tunes in that list, it is still a great song.

Royal Blood has been around since 2011 and those folks I know over in England are probably quite familiar with them since that is where they hail from. Worthing, West Sussex to be exact.

Check them out if you like what you hear!

A nice varied mix of good tunes. I thought we were in for something pretty hard after the first track, but then went in a good direction that I like. I didn't hear any of these before that I can remember, it is good to get some new tune suggestions.

I don't usually live in one space for too long except maybe Country. Once I get in that groove, it is a bit hard to get out of it. I can only handle the hard stuff in small doses unless it is classic stuff.

That cover for the Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass album is wild.

I loved The 59 Sound. I've never heard of Gaslight Anthem before. I'll have to go look them up and listen more. Wilder Woods is also new to me, That's a great song!

I never got into Spotify. I guess I still can't get into the mindset of paying for streaming music that you never own. But maybe I'll give it another try one of these days.

I'm not saying the model is perfect, but I think they have come a long way in terms of giving the artists some kind of cut of the revenue. I don't think Taylor Swift would have put her stuff back on there if they didn't. She is just too smart for that. I'm glad you liked some of them. That album cover is iconic!

That's all new music to me, but all good. I do know Royal Blood. I bought their first album after seeing them on TV and saw them support Foo Fighters. They have a unique thing going on with just bass and drums.

I discover a lot of new music through Spotify. It generally knows what I like now even though my tastes are varied.

That is cool. I am glad you enjoyed it. Yes, Spotify does a creepy good job of giving us stuff we like. For me it is well worth paying the monthly subscription.

Lol - I also remember trying to tune into to far off radio stations back in the 80s. I particularly liked Radio Luxemburg ! Those were fun times - if you could hit the tuning right and get a good signal you'd be pretty happy !
I like all of those. I'd only heard of Royal blood before - they produce an amazing sound for just two of them ! Quite like a lot of their stuff.

Yeah, they are really great. I dug their sound as soon as I heard them. Dead Sara really surprised me too.
