#threetunetuesday: Back to School

This time of year is always mad crazy for @mrsbozz, @iikrypticsii, and I. No matter how much we prepare for the start of the school year, there is always something unexpected that pops up. I know of at least one or two songs that can be associated with the end of school, but there aren't that many that celebrate the start of school.

For good reason I suppose.

I have a feeling if you took a poll 80% of us really don't want to be here at all. Students and staff alike. I honestly can't think of a profession that is more vilified these days than those in public education. Except maybe politicians and law enforcement, but let's be honest, the politicians kind of deserve it don't they?

With all that in mind, I am using school (or education) in general as the theme for this weeks #threetunetuesday sponsored by @ablaze.

There are a couple of songs that fit well, but I am going to stay away from for obvious reasons. "Don't Stand so Close to Me" by the Police for example. Great song, but not really the message I want to be sending here. There is one exception that might surprise you, but I will explain that when we get there.

So here we go!

I know that there has been some controversy surrounding Sam Cooke. The fact remains that he is a pretty phenomenal singer. I just picked up his greatest hits album on vinyl a little while ago, so cancelling him is not on my agenda. That being said, if the allegations of rape and domestic abuse are true, I don't condone them at all.

While this song never specifically mentions school, it does mention some of the subjects that we often learn in school. Though they might not be called by the same names that are mentioned in the song now. Biology is probably called something like "Life Science" now and some of the history they still teach is more like a fairy tale. I guess it just depends on which region you fall into.

For me, this song always reminds me of the movie "The Witness". It was a great flick with Harrison Ford who plays a cop that protects an Amish mother and her son who witnessed a murder. This song has a brief cameo in the movie and if you know, you know.

To be fair, this isn't the first time that "My Old School" has made it into one of my Three Tune Tuesday posts. I kind of don't care though. It's just such a good song. Probably my most favorite Steely Dan song of all time. It has a good beat and the lyrics are pretty fire. Some of my favorite lines come from this song.

These days, working education isn't quite as easy as it used to be. Students and parents all have their own ideas about how things should be run and they aren't afraid to tell you or call you out when it doesn't fall in line with their narrative.

As I was saying. Especially this past week as summer was coming to a close, there have been plenty of times that we have expressed our distaste at "going back to our old school".

In any event, this is just a good jam. I can't think of many people who don't like or appreciate Steely Dan, except for maybe Amanda Shires and Jason Isbell. You might need to Google that one if you don't know what I am talking about.

Finally, I could have went any number of directions with this last song, but I decide we needed some metal. Sure, I could have thrown out some "Smokin in the Boys Room" by Brownsville Station, or the cover of that song by Motley Crue. These days though, they have Vape detectors in the bathrooms, so you can't really get away with that sort of thing like you used to be able to.

Those things have something like 21 individual sensors in them these days. It's crazy.

Sadly, I can't relate to "Hot for Teacher" at all. When I was in school, all of the teachers were relatively old and not fantasy worthy. Sure, my wife and I both work for the same school district, but "Hot for School Social Worker" would probably be a more appropriate title when talking about @mrsbozz and I.

It is interesting the number of hookups that do happen though. No, nothing in the "Don't Stand So Close To Me" vein, but more the co-workers hooking up sort of thing. I've been working in this district for close to 20 years and I have seen my fair share of marriages fall apart because one teacher couldn't control the fact that they were "Hot for Teacher".

It's sad really, but I guess that sort of thing probably happens in all businesses, not just the education sector. Heck, we hear about office romances all the time don't we? Either that or business trips that get a little too wild.

Don't even get me started about what goes on at some of the education conferences!

As I get ready to start this second day of school with students back in the building, you better believe I am going to need some good music to get me through the day!

Let's make it an awesome year!

Van Helen takes the cake on this one! I had a seventh grade teacher who was an extra in "Footloose" in the bar scene. She was a pretty lady... I can identify!

Sam Cooke a song I most definitely remember from childhood, as for what people do wrong in their lives does not take their talented side away.

Steely Dan another played on the radio, not something purchased but fun to hear again.

Van Halen was a classic, very popular, never seen the intro so enjoyed this. Our teachers were way to strict to pass any comment in their direction !LOLZ

Haha, yeah my teachers were quite strict as well. Things were much different back then. I'm glad you enjoyed this!

We had some real old witches along with a couple of wanna be as well, forever running the gauntlet to keep out of trouble.

Cool, my kids are back tomorrow, though teaching begins Monday. Is the picture of the classroom at the top yours? It looks mighty depressing, though i'm sure the higher powers allow you to decorate, it just makes me remember my depressing days in school and how desperately I never wanted to be there.

But in hindsight, were they not the best years in so many ways? Huge vacations, home by 3 or 4pm, weekends off, friends. (I saw this in a meme... valid!)

If I were to pick music for it I'd go with what I actually used to listen to back then, maybe something from Nirvana, Slipknot (yeah I was a metalhead) and early Eminem (can pretty much guess my age from that)

Nah, this is one of the classrooms where I work, but I am the Tech Director, so I work in an office most of the day. I think it may seem like the best years of our lives, but in the grand scheme of things, it's just a small fraction. That is what I try to remind my nieces and nephews. You are a little younger than me I think. I remember I was out of school working at Radio Shack when Eminem popped on the scene. Living about two hours north of Detroit, it was exciting.
