The music industry has changed in recent years, now the era of singles, which had its first stage many years ago at the very beginning of the recording industry, has re-emerged; but if singles used to coexist with long plays, now, in many cases, they replace them.
I believe full-length albums have virtues that go beyond the singles and give them a special value, and in this section I share long plays or full-length albums, which from my particular tastes, I consider valuable as a whole, and not only as a collection of singles. They are albums that can be enjoyed from beginning to end, and that are more than the sum of their parts, I hope you enjoy them.
La industria de la música ha cambiado en los últimos años, ahora ha resurgido la época de los singles, que tuvo su primera etapa hace muchos años ya, en los inicios mismos de la industria discográfica; pero si antes los singles convivían con los long play, ahora, en muchos casos, los sustituyen.
Yo creo que los discos de larga duración tienen virtudes que van más allá de los sencillos y les dan un valor especial, y en esta sección comparto discos de larga duración, que a partir de mis gustos particulares, considero que son valiosos como un todo, y no solo como una colección de sencillos. I met Yussef Dayes thanks to YouTube, and he immediately became one of my favorite drummers. From then on I became interested in listening to his albums, but not all of his songs make me feel the same as when I see him play live, there is something different that I can't pinpoint, that from my point of view, is not fully captured in his studio recordings.
But this album recorded live in the company of two of his major collaborators, Rocco Palladino (bass) and Charlie Stacey (keyboards), does capture that something that I feel is missing in some of his studio recordings, and that's why it has become one of my favorites. At almost 70 minutes long, it is truly a journey through Dayes' peculiar style, which mixes jazz, elements of funk, hip hop, electronic music (drum and bass, trip hop), and Latin and Afro-American sounds, in a very particular blend.
This is not a drummer that is characterized by hitting the drums hard, but because sometimes he even seems to caress them, he is also unorthodox in the cymbals and drums he uses, and that contributes to make him so different and particular. The album is quite accessible, but if you are not familiar with jazz or Dayes' style, some may find it a bit heavy for its length; for me it is always a pleasure to listen to and I hope for you as well.
Conocí a Yussef Dayes gracias a YouTube, e inmediatamente se volvió uno de mis bateristas favoritos. A partir de ahí me interesé en escuchar sus discos, pero no en todas sus canciones me hace sentir lo mismo que al verlo tocar en vivo, hay algo distinto que no logro precisar, que desde mi punto de vistan, no se captura del todo en sus grabaciones de estudio.
Pero este disco grabado en vivo en compañía de dos de sus mayores colaboradores, Rocco Palladino (bajo) y Charlie Stacey (teclados), si captura ese algo que siento que falta en parte de sus grabaciones de estudio, y por eso se ha vuelto uno de mis favoritos. Con casi 70 minutos de duración es verdaderamente un viaje por el peculiar estilo de Dayes, que mezcla al jazz elementos del funk, el hip hop, la música electrónica (drum and bass, trip hop), y sonidos latinos y afro-americanos, en una mezcla muy particular.
Este no es un baterista que se caracterice por pegarle con fuerza a los tambores, sino porque a veces hasta parece que los acaricia, es también poco ortodoxo en los platillos y tambores que usa, y eso contribuye a hacerlo tan diferente y particular. El disco es bastante accesible, pero si no estás familiarizado con el jazz o el estilo de Dayes, puede que para algunos resulte pesado por su duración; para mi siempre es un placer escucharlo y espero que para ustedes también.

I know Alfa Mist since recently, thanks to the collaborations he has done with Yussef Dayes, and I had already heard some of his songs, but I had never listened to any of his albums from beginning to end. It was thanks to the recommendation of a YouTuber, who included this album among his favorites, that I looked for it and played it while I was working, and what a surprise I got, the album is a real gem.
Composed of only eight songs, and almost an hour long, it feels more like a compilation of hits than a regular album. All the songs are excellent, and despite having certain elements in common, each one has its own personality and stands on its own. In some of them the guitar plays the leading role, in others the trumpet, in others the piano or the keyboards, and thanks to this variety the album is not tiring but extremely enjoyable and varied.
The mixture of jazz with Latin elements, funk, soul, and even touches of hip hop, resolved with extraordinary finesse, makes his music something that can please both jazz purists and those who prefer more alternative proposals. It is not a difficult album for ears not accustomed to the genre, but it is extremely accessible without losing quality and complexity. This is an ideal album for all audiences, whether jazz lovers or not, and one of my most treasured discoveries of the year.
Conozco a Alfa Mist desde hace poco, gracias a las colaboraciones que ha hecho con Yussef Dayes, y ya había escuchado algunos temas suyos, pero nunca había escuchado alguno de sus discos de principio a fin. Fue gracias a la recomendación de un YouTuber, que incluyo este disco entre sus favoritos, que lo busque y lo puse mientras trabajaba, y vaya sorpresa la que me he llevado, el disco es una verdadera joya.
Compuesto por tan solo ocho canciones, y con casi una hora de duración, parece más un compilado de éxitos que un disco normal. Todos las canciones son excelente, y a pesar de tener ciertos elementos en común, cada una tiene su propia personalidad y se sostiene por si sola. En algunas la guitarra tiene protagonismo, en otras las trompeta, en otras el piano o los teclados, y gracias a esta variedad el disco no resulta cansado sino sumamente disfrutable y variado.
La mezcla de jazz con elementos latinos, funk, soul, e incluso pinceladas de hip hop, resueltas con una fineza extraordinaria, hace de su música algo que puede gustan tanto a los puristas del jazz como a aquellos que prefieren propuestas más alternativas. No es un disco difícil para oídos no acostumbrados al género, sino que es sumamente accesible sin por ello perder calidad y complejidad. Este es un disco ideal para todo público, y sea amante del jazz o no, y uno de mis descubrimientos más preciados del año.
