On An Island.

Memories are my friends... Of course, when I remember them. They're also more and more valuable as they become more and more stale.

I saw this little community that I hope will grow as soon as possible, Throwback Thursday, and liked and agreed with what it calls for. Reminders and lessons learned from old times!

I love reminiscing about past events, places, and people and I'm glad I now have one more reason to share them here. Especially since the memories are supported by photographs. Photographs that bring proof that what we talk about really happened.

The sea is my great passion in life. Well, not so great... true sea lovers swim, sail, drown. I'm a more contemplative admirer! I think most of the memories I will share here will be about the sea.

First time on an island

When I first saw the sea I was 18 years old and that was more than fifty years ago. I lived then and still live about 200 km away from the Black Sea. My parents were not at all interested in the sea, so after I turned 18 I went to the sea alone.

It was instant and definitive love.

I've been to the sea every year since. Until 1990 only to the Black Sea, in Romania. After 1990, when the borders of Romania were opened, I also went to the Black Sea, but in Bulgaria. Not every year. Life doesn't always work the way we want it to.

In 2017 I went to Greece for the first time.

On an island.

Thassos!

Three years in a row followed in Thassos, 2019 was the last. The pandemic prevented me from going in 2020 as well, although I had promised myself that I would go to the island every year, as long as I could move.

I started to retreat home. In 2021 I went to Bulgaria again, although every year I dreamed of the island in Greece but life wanted to show me again that it doesn't just "flow" my way.

Thassos 2017

We arrived in Greece without having planned it. I received a gift from my son of a week's holiday in Limenaria, the second town of Thassos. A pleasant surprise... and I still didn't know what I was going to see.

We went with a group of tourists, by coach, from Bucharest. We went one night and half a day. Enormous. The trip was quite tiring but what we got was miraculous.

The Aegean Sea!

Then I saw and understood what a warm sea means. A sea and a Mediterranean climate. I understood why the Black Sea is more a lake than a sea...

The Aegean Sea, a sea from the writings of Herodotus, is a sea on which all the gods and heroes of antiquity lived, fought, and sailed. An emerald sea, with clear and truly salty waters.

When you go in a group, you have to stay in a group. Together we tried to discover the island. We were between conflicting feelings. Where there are two people there are different interests. Where there are thirty people there's a whole mess. Everyone wants something else. I didn't like that and decided never to go to the group again. I almost succeeded.

Despite the unpleasantness of being forced to do what the group does, I have to admit it was the only time I've ever taken a trip around the island. We saw hidden beaches...

IMG_20170918_122050.1.jpg

... we visited the biggest monastery...

IMG_20170918_112842.1.jpg

... I saw bays and rocky shores falling into the sea...

IMG_20170918_115310.1.jpg

... and many, many more.

Limenaria, the town where we stayed, remained my favorite. In all the holidays that followed (two), we lived only in this town, only with the same host.

Here we saw the most beautiful sunsets.

I had the best gyros!

IMG_20170917_193840.jpg

Generous taverns.

And many, many more...

I hope I have managed to follow the rules and guidelines of the community.

Share your best memories with a new perspective of learning, reflection, and fun through images and videos. You can write about those special moments in the past that marked your life taking into account that it must be an original and quality post... Throwback Thursday

Other than that, I'll try to save my memories here. Time is passing, my neurons are dying by the millions and I fear the time will come when the photos in the folder called "Thassos" won't tell me much. I would like to remember then to look for the posts in this community, that remind me who I am and what I was looking for on an island, in Thassos!

I love those kinds of hidden beaches, where nature is the one that shapes its appearance. Oh, going in a group and everyone wanting something else. I think that is why we mostly travel on our own. Beautiful place, btw. Amazing colour of the sea... <3

That is exactly why I love Thassos so much.
I know all Greek islands are the same or even more beautiful but I don't have time to see more so I will remain devoted to this one. It was the only time I traveled with a group. Otherwise, I like to travel as you do. In my case, with my wife and sometimes with a friend.

What a beautiful island, dreamlike and paradisiacal. I love the sea, I also love it but only contemplate it, but not swim in it because I can not swim but that does not mean that I do not love and admire it hehe

The pictures are amazing, a wonderful island 😍 A gift from nature.

Thank you! I don't swim either so I prefer to be by the sea and not in it...

Such nice memories! I share a similar journey as you... Lived most of my life by the river Danube, and somehow, always connected to the water... As I come from a modest family, we didn't travel to the sea at all... When I got married and had a child, that was my first "real" trip to the sea... and it was love at first sight... 😃
Now, I live by the sea! I have never been to Greece, but I hope I will one day... They have such beautiful beaches and islands!

Thanks for sharing!

My most beautiful memories are linked to the sea because the sea beautifies them!
Interesting. Our journey to the sea was very similar...
I like the Danube too. Especially its delta. From Bucharest to the Danube is about 60 km. Greece is a wonderful country! I guess you have seen @fotostef's posts ... if not, I highly recommend it, because he is an excellent photographer and he has what to photograph!
I hope you get to Greece soon!
I have now voted for Liotes HIVE Witness. I knew I had a proxy and that I was stuck but I discovered now that it was out of date.

I totally agree, love for the sea is love at first sight, it happened to me exactly the same, in the water I feel one with nature and there is nothing else in the world. I can perfectly understand that feeling.

I loved the places and even more the hidden beaches .... is just different, it's magical!❤️

I can only agree and am pleasantly impressed that you too love the sea. I could be envious that you can see the sea whenever you want... but I'm not. I'm just glad!

For 40 years I didn't see it and now... I am happy and the Mediterranean Sea was the one I most wanted to see! Thank you very much!❤️

Hello my friend! Welcome to Throwback Thursdays!. Thank you so much for sharing content in this nascent community and for bringing the sea to our memory stories; I was sick yesterday, but I read your post and didn't want to stop commenting...

I really like your post that you emphasize that things are not as we plan them, but they come as fate puts them in my way, I think if I had thought that way from the beginning I would have avoided several bad times hehe. Your love at first sight with the sea is delicious, and that promise to visit it every year, is a way to recover those first 18 years that you didn't know it.

For me it is a dream to know these places you talk about, like the Mediterranean Sea or the famous Black Sea, which is really a lake (I understand), I hope someday to visit Europe and know them. Your pictures are amazing and I'm glad you had them saved around, I imagine you have many more and I hope you can share them with us whenever you like on Hive's #TbtThursdays. Happy weekend brother, happy to know you through your words! ✌️

Thank you! I have to start my answer with an apology. I'm a grandfather and these days I've been spending time with my granddaughter... who is a vampire of love and time. When I'm with her I can't do anything else. My apologies for the late reply!

TBT fits like a glove for me. I'm getting on in years (my wife doesn't like me saying I'm old... still, less than a month until I'm 70) and like any man who has reached this point, I have more memories than hopes for the future. I fear for my memories. In order not to lose the ones I have left I think I need to train.... not to forget.

Writing in this community is the best and most enjoyable training. I hope I don't miss another Thursday from now on... of course if my granddaughter agrees.

Thank you for welcoming me to TBT, @jesuslnrs, thank you for this elegant way of doing it, and thank you for thinking of starting this community!

What a nice comment!. I hope to reach that age in good health, in the meantime I will continue to build many moments that will remain as great memories in the future. You will always be welcome here as long as your granddaughter allows it. This year has been very hard for me, so I materialized this idea of bringing the #tbt to Hive to remind myself how beautiful life is despite adversity and I have immersed myself in the stories that others have brought here, yours with the sea has been one of my favorites. Happy start of the week!...

Thank you! The last two years have been hard for me too. I like to retreat into memories. I'm sorry things didn't work well for you. I wish the bad things will pass and the sun will rise again... Yes, have a better week!
