Balchik Lavender

I think I'll write my first series. You've seen how much-watched series are now. Netflix is full of series...

Why wouldn't Hive be too?

I am a man limited in many things, I am lazy and shallow. I don't know many things, I haven't traveled to many places, and I don't have tools for writing, photography, painting, or music, I am just an amateur who strives. All of the above are some of my passions. I try to take advantage of these passions and collect them in a few insignificant posts here.

The fact that I have so many shortcomings forces me to write about a few things and have pretty much the same themes that I do. I try to get the most out of every walk, shopping trip, show, and exhibition, no matter how small. That's why I write many posts about the same subject...

That's how I got the idea to approach these posts about Balchik as a series!

In fact, so recent short trip to the sea, the Black Sea, to Balchik in Bulgaria, my favorite place for walking and relaxing, for forgetting my troubles and cooling off with the breeze, for the salty smell near the sea, has been so full of activities that it's worth trying to expose them here in several episodes!

An important part of this short holiday was dedicated to the botanical garden of Balchik, a fabulous garden surrounding the Castle of Queen Mary of Romania. I managed to tell about one part of the garden, which is the cactus garden. The most important cactus garden in south-eastern Europe. But the botanical garden still has an important part dedicated to other plants, flowers, and trees, separated from the cactus garden by a trickle of water, spring water, and a huge natural fence made of cypress.

As I like to do many things backward, and this time I will do the same with the botanical garden, from which I show you, for now, and to make you curious, just going out, the end of its exploration...

The exit from the garden brings Queen Mary's favorite fountain close by.

Those who have landscaped the place knew not to make the exit from the beautiful garden too brutal and abrupt and put a few more flowers and shrubs to say goodbye.

Everything has an end, unfortunately, and I'm not talking only about the end of the visit to the botanical garden. The end has come and my holiday companions, my wife, and our girlfriend are quite tired, even though they have rested many times on the garden benches. I almost said age was to blame, but I'm afraid they'll read this too...

I knew, I don't know if they knew this anymore but I knew that they would immediately come alive because there was going to be a commercial area. This exit from the garden was also an... entrance at the same time. It's where most tourists arrive, by bus, on day trips that necessarily include a visit to the garden. So they pass through a lot of stalls with all kinds of objects only good to buy, to be made as gifts or for their own enjoyment.

The goods are not of the best quality (many Chinese, like everywhere else in this world) but they should not be too expensive so that the traders can benefit from that good principle in such business.

That is, to collect small amounts of money from a lot of customers!

"My girls" are sure victims in such situations. They simply can't resist... even though they bought similar items last year, which they're already bored with.

We had a bit of a chance though. Being the beginning of the season, with still few tourists, many stalls were closed, so it was a poorer offer.

"The girls" found something else after buying small gifts for friends and relatives. Clothing, summer clothes, good for the sea. Another must-have!

I have to admit, I too was interested in a piece of clothing... for my head. Hats! I've developed a passion, also forced by the increasingly aggressive sun, for hats.

Of course, the girls got involved immediately. The pleasure of shopping. It doesn't matter for whom, but for them to look, for them to buy...

I bought my hat in Bucharest. I've been fooled twice! The first time in Bucharest, where I found the hat I had just bought cheaper in another shop.

The second time I realized here, in Balchik, that I had fooled myself by not waiting to buy from this bazaar, where the hats were nicer and obviously cheaper!

We arrived at the exit of the small bazaar quite well, i.e. not with a lot of money spent. Only one temptation remained. Ceramics!

Luckily we have a house full of these items from previous trips. We don't have any more room to put them! So we moved on, especially since we were supposed to go for lunch at our favorite restaurant, the Blue Lion (a new episode?... Yes!).

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's her!). It started as a challenge and has grown into a much-loved community here. I can brag about something...

I signed up for Hive's precursor in the same year and month as Denise. I turned 6 here and coincidentally, I earned this badge on a post that contained the number 6! Happy 6th Hive Birthday, Denise!

We always have to put a flower at the end, #alwaysaflower, now more than ever, being an anniversary!

Because Denise wrote today about lavender then I dedicate this Balchik lavender to everyone!

End of the 7th episode.

I think most of us has started as an amateur blogger on HIVE, but it has helped us to improve our writing skills through years. Now, we can create a post from a sample event even in our daily life.

Keep up with writing my friend, I like the lavander of Balçık!

Happy Hive Birthday to both of us!!! I missed my reminder, or I didn't get one? Perhaps it was while I was not on the computer. Anyway, we did it! I had no idea either one of us would be here that long. It still surprises me.

Everything you write about Balchik is such a pleasant reminder of how beautiful it is, the sea is, and life in general when visiting here. Food tastes better, the weather is perfect and all seems well in the world. Hehe... until you let the women loose in the shopping zone! I cannot believe you were in there too. Just kidding. You need to keep your head covered in that summer sun. I started reading and writing this last night in case it looks a little eclectic. :)

Please keep writing about things you love. It reflects that in your writing and I have to say that it is the best part of enjoying what are writing, yes? I consider this my journal of sorts, things I was seeing, feeling or even hoping for. It doesn't make a difference if you write about it every day. I love sharing your day with you. What it is like when you make dinners, that was fun for me. :) So, where you think it is boring - is not for us, your people. One day, Ilinca will read your stories and see how she was involved in your life, how you look forward to her visits, and everything about those times.

We both did it with Lavender this day. Who knew? We both must have. We do have an uncanny sense of that. But, back to Balchik! I can never see enough or hear too much about this beloved place. There is always the sun, something the beach resorts are good about and it could not be considered without the beach! I love that Magda and you take us along on your quite pleasant, and also very peaceful walks, especially the ones that go through the Romanian Queen's Castle. It has been truly interesting to be able to peek into the history books, seeing her refuge from Bucharest and the war. Stranded between the big world powers, in the end, this small kingdom lost everything The palace is a painful reminder of what Romania could have been if the communists had not won. I am not sure you can find a more peaceful place. I think it is one of the reasons I love it when you write about it. It gives me hope of righting the wrongs in this world. The garden is exquisite and the thought and care that went into the design? Stunning, especially the view!

I loved your post and I want to thank you for sharing it with me!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

More proof that time flies, @dswigle!

I love to write, and I do so even at the detriment of interaction and comments, although I know, especially from you, that to be appreciated here you have to harmoniously combine these two activities. With me it is unbalanced and that has consequences. Sometimes I get upset but then I realize that I am the main one to blame.
You say you write primarily for yourself, and @galenkp said the same (to quote two important authors here in Hive), even though I said it a few times... especially when I found that nobody read a post, haha... A little joke. It's true, I think many write, as you say, like in a diary. A diary open to others too, if they are interested!

What you say about Balchik is true and I'm glad you know this place so well. With my help and I am proud of it.

Queen Mary of Romania wanted to rule this area of Europe, the Balkans... She intended to do as her grandmother, Queen Victoria, did by marrying her children. She succeeded in the royal house of Greece, Serbia, and so on. Unfortunately with Bulgaria, she didn't succeed and so she lost the domain of Balchik in 1940, but in fact, she never saw that because she died in 1938. I recently read that she died because of malpractice by her doctor.

I wish you a pleasant week!
