The Music Industry in 2026 Is Kind of a Mess- Here's What's Actually Going On
If you're an independent artist right now, you've probably felt like the ground keeps shifting under you. Streaming payouts aren't getting better. AI-generated tracks are flooding the same playlists you're trying to get into. And every platform you post on seems to want more of your attention while giving you less in return.
You're not imagining it. Let's talk about what's actually happening.
Streaming Still Doesn't Pay
This isn't new, but it's gotten worse, not better. The major platforms are still paying out fractions of a cent per stream, and now they're splitting that tiny pool with an ever-growing wave of AI-generated content that costs nothing to produce and gets uploaded by the thousands every day. Not that we hate AI-generated music, infact, we have AI studio tools to help you generate music, but we are just simply stating the facts of what is happening.
What this means is the actual pie every independent artist is fighting over keeps getting sliced thinner. You could have the same fanbase, the same stream count, and still watch your payout shrink year over year, simply because more content (a lot of it not even made by a person) is competing for the same royalty pool.
The Labels Aren't Coming to Save You
Major labels have leaned even harder into safe bets: proven artists, viral moments, and catalog they already own. Signing developing independent artists is expensive and slow, and most labels would rather wait for you to build an audience yourself before they even take a meeting.
That's not a knock on labels. It's just the reality of where the incentives sit. If you're waiting for someone to "discover" you and hand you a deal, you're playing a much longer and less certain game than building your own thing directly.
AI Changed the Production Game, For Real This Time
Here's the flip side of all this, and it's genuinely good news if you use it right, the tools for making professional-sounding music have never been more accessible. Mastering that used to cost hundreds of dollars per track and require a trained engineer can now happen in minutes, in the Blocktunes Studio no less, hint hint. More artists are waking up to a simple fact of musician life... If you don't own your masters, your data, and your direct relationship with your fans, you're building someone else's business, not your own. Every stream, every post, every fan interaction on a traditional platform is an asset that platform owns, not you.
That's exactly why more artists are looking at blockchain-based tools, not because of hype, but because owning your content and your payment rails outright is a genuinely different value proposition than renting space on someone else's platform. The problem is, the 2022 NFT run really killed the whole idea for many, so the sentiment has changed a bit. But that's really because of hype and the lack of education about what the technology of digital ownership is all about. We are hoping to change that!
So Where Does That Leave You?
Honestly? In a better position than you might think. The tools are cheaper and more powerful than they've ever been, and don't take years of being an engineer or a degree to understand how to use them. The audience-building playbook (consistent posting, direct fan connection, genuine engagement) works whether or not a label ever gets involved. And there are now real alternatives to the "post on five platforms and hope the algorithm likes you" grind.

STOPThe big question is if web 3 music has got any better? Since the NFT days the conversation of better returns vs streams and platforms trying to be the one has been diluted. I'm actually a regular on Web3 music show on X space.
Some people have found successful cases, some hasn't. Some did a great job pushing their content while the majority didn't get any wild numbers.
Same thing with metaverse, it was fun and a few did it really good, but most people didn't get it and went away. Just wonder how did AI impact that environment 3 - 6 years later.
Well, we are giving it one more go. The NFT craze was not the right way to do it. Everyone was just trying to capitalize and flip some big money for basically nothing. I am not sure if the web3 space is going anywhere really outside of DEFI, so who knows. We'll see and if it doesn't work, well, back to the drawing board.

I guess, but what's the new business model?
Previously it was, you don't need a label, just stream and earn 24/7.
Then it was, you own your own music and name your own price.
Now with AI is 'make the music you always wanted'.
But they don't mention if its in any way 'profitable'; I keep being bombarded by SUNO announcements about how to compose your own song, which is great. But, what's the new business model now. Are we still on streaming train or are we selling NFTs?
As a consumer, I have taken the time to buy whole MP3 albums from places like Bandcamp. Not sure if their numbers are going up, or down, but hopefully someone is paying attention. Same with other popular platforms like Soundcloud or Youtube music, or Patreon. All these are Web2 alternatives. But are there any new ones taking over in 2026? Do you know? Does anyone know? Is ITunes still relevant?
iTunes is built into Apple Music. It's the purchase option. I know I still purchase music if I need it for anything other than listening and use it. The industry is in a weird place.
The way I see it, I can only build what I would want to see, the only way I know how. Is it the solution, probably not, but at least I am trying something.
The problem is, I only hear complaints about things from people instead of what could be solutions. So how am I to know what is best. I can only report things as I see them and let people know what we are trying to do over here.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does

I'm not a musician, but I record a lot of live band performances. For mastering, I use Audacity, which—with plugins—offers all the features you provide. I really need to take the time to check out your platform sometime.
I used to use Audacity like 20 years ago, lol, so I can't speak to what it can do these days, I am an old sound engineer certified in Logic Pro X and proficient using Pro Tools, Ableton, Cuebase, etc, and building tools I use myself. So yeah, give them a try. For automated tools, they are pretty good if I don't say so myself. I had 2 other engineers work with me on the mastering tool alone.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
