20 year old Camera vs Modern Mirrorless - Valley Echo Rock Fest - Day 3

Canon 5D classic vs Canon R6

On day 3 of Valley Echo Rock Fest i decided to also take with me a Canon 5D classic, camera made in 2005. It has a 12.8mp sensor and my card for it has a capacity of 96 photos. It has 9 focus points. Canon R6 has 4897 focus points 😂
I took it with me as a challenge for my self and to slow down a little, because the shooting stile is completely different. It is almost like film, you do see what you got, but just an estimate because the screen at the back of the camera is, well not so great.

If you guess 2 or 3 right you will probably get most of them right, as you can see the difference, mostly in color and maybe a bit of sharpness. But for me, to be honest, the quality of photos is not that much different.

200+

Valley Echo Rock Fest - Day 3, 28.07.2024

Valley Echo Rock Fest is i could now probably say an annual event (4. year happening) in outskirts of Padina. It started after the lockdowns because bands were eager to play live, people wanted to hang out and it was an opportunity for some young local bands to perform on a stage.

The first year all 6 bands were from Padina (a place of probably around 4k people) and it was a one day event.

Second year it was a two day event. And the festival got its official name. Day One 2022, Day Two 2022

Last year it was a 3 day event Valley Echo Rock Fest - Day Two. Same is planed for this year.

Ha! I used 5D till the last year, then was made a gift to myself and obtained Mark 3. Now I dont want to go back ofc - it is not a question of 'better quality' or more focusing points; tho having better ISO and size of frame does matter, especially for my macro photography / night photography which I do love. Mark 3 is simply... more pleasurable! and can shoot the video (5D from 2005 cant do that).

Dont want to guess the photos, where is which, hehe... all selection is awesome and suitable reportage. !BEER

the fields that had real noticeable development are ISO and autofocus. maybe more frames per second. To be honest 5d was close to the limits here. I could have maybe go one stop more on ISO but it would be close to not acceptable :)
Most of the shots on r6 were at 3200 ISO and i didn't even think about it.

They didn't even think about video on 5d. Live screen was Sci-fi at the time. And checking if things are in focus is pretty hard if you didn't miss focus totally. Small motion blur is also hard to see (most photos i discarded were because of motion blur because i could not get higher than 1/160 and didn't see the blur on the screen)

i must say i got a bit lazier because of face recognition focus (and it feels it is better when using live screen than viewfinder). So slowing down a bit with central focus point was refreshing 😂

(Edited)

While there have been improvements I'm sure in ISO, autofocus, preview, etc the fact that you are a great photographer has mitigated those advantages such that I certainly can't tell the difference. It might be that the R6 would make life easier on a person beginning...or life easier on an expert like yourself :)

i would even argue that at the beginning you need to suffer a bit, it forces you to take more time thinking about the light and composition :)
