Hive Music Festival | Week 55, round 1 | Seis por Derecho (Instrumental Improvisation)

We are back on the Hive Music Festival for it's 55th week, round 1. There's a lot of traditional music yet to explore and in today, I wanted to show some of the music from the Venezuelan plains. This is one of the "golpes" in a 6/8 time measure. It's called "Seis por Derecho". There are other variation of Joropo in this time measure that are called "seis" (six in English).

This one is popular because famous guitarist and composer Antonio Lauro created an academic version of it as a Guitar Concert. And, lo, that one is a tough piece to play. There's an adaptation of that concert for Venezuelan Cuatro, but it's way off my skills. However, I have taken up the challenge of learning it.

Regarding it's technical level, the traditional one tends to be played on repeating patterns and dividing bars between chords. Of course, it's usually a Harp playing the melody, but having only 4 strings to do it means we need to be resourceful. In the harmonic department, the piece follows a fixed pattern in a tonal progression. It goes IV - V7 - V7 - I. This repeats over and over with some tweaks on accents and rhythm without going off tempo.

It is an interesting exercise to start on the path of Joropo on 6/8 measures. So far, all the pieces I have recorded in this genre have been on 3/4. And yes, you have the same number of notes in the bars, but the accents make all the difference.

Estamos de regreso en el Hive Music Festival por la semana 55, ronda 1. Todvía me queda un montón de música tradicional venezolana por explorar. Hoy quise traerles este cover de un golpe a 6/8 del joropo llanero. Esto es "Seis por Derecho". Existen en el llano otras formas género con el nombre "seis" (por ejemplo, el Seis Numerao).

Este es especial porque el guitarrista y compositor Antonio Lauro creó un concierto para guitarra clásica tomando aspectos tradicionales. ¡Vaya concierto que es ese! Existe una adaptación de este para cuatro venezolano, pero está por encima de mis habilidades por ahora. Aunque tengo el reto personal de aprenderlo.

Respecto a la ficha técnica de este golpe, tiende a seguir la tendencia de sus pares. La melodía mantiene patrones con variaciones sobre una base armónica fija. Por supuesto, suele haber distinción entre instrumentos melódicos y acompañantes. En mi caso, solo tengo 4 cuerdas para hacer todo. La armonía sigue un patrón tonal muy simple que se repite en ciclos de cuatros compases con una estructura de IV - V7 - V7 - I. Existen los adornos rítmicos con acentos y floreos. Todos estos se hacen sin perder el tiempo de la pieza.

Esto fue un ejercicio interesante para comenzar el camino sobre los joropos a 6/8. Hasta ahora, todos los que he tocado han sido a 3/4. Son compases con la misma cantidad de notas, pero los acentos hacen toda la diferencia.
