Hive Music Festival | Week 94 round 1 | "La Mariposa" by María Rodríguez
Getting back into the performances for this new cycle, I bring another homage for another musician from my hometown. This time is for María Rodríguez. I have talked about María before. This homage comes as part of her 100th birthday, celebrated last week.
Her extensive repertoire includes many original compositions. Even when she wasn't the kind of singer that got into the improvisation patterns of our music she did something interesting. All her Joropos are in 6/8 measure. This is an odd phenomenon. It seems it was her preferred measure to compose her songs. And it marks the structure of her compositions on verses and chorus that repeat one after the other until the song reaches its end. There are rarely changes in the time measures of her compositions.
This one La Mariposa is about transformation. It is no wonder why another of her nicknames during her lifetime was that Mariposa (butterfly). As a young singer and dancer back in the day she had a fluttering grace on the stage. As she grew up and became the boss of the dancing ladies for the regional music her style became the norm for dancing. This tradition is still carried on by her niece.
Having the chance to explore her music now as a soloist is a delight. I love her songs. In my grandparents house, they use to play them from time to time. It's no mystery. Once of the only moments when my grandparents left their house in their last years of life was when they made the big funeral for María. How could they not assist? They were neighbors during their childhood years.
And I hope you enjoy it as well!
