Hive Music Festival | Week, 116, round 2 | "Aguinaldo Carupanero" (Venezuelan Folklore)

Sometimes, searching for the author of a song gets complicated. There are many options roaming around the web and no filter or absolute answer. In those cases, I think it is safe to say the song is part of the folklore. I bet it isn't always like that but maybe it is true for this one (or so I hope).

For my second entry in this cycle of the festival, I prepared this aguinaldo that has a very dull name, Aguinaldo Carupanero. It is of course referring to the second most important city in Sucre State, Carúpano. This piece is a good example of something that is part of the Christmas traditions in the east coast of Venezuela and its music in general, repetition for emphasis. The verses of this song have a repetition towards the end. And the idea of this is to switch the order of the phrase to restate.

It isn't a particularly hard piece to learn and play. I remember we use to sing this in the choir during Christmas and since we have this setting until January 21st, then, there's still time to keep playing these songs.

The lyrics are funny and they all tell things about Jesus being born at Carúpano. This is reflected in the names of famous places in the city being included along the verses. It is also very clear about the coastal nature of the song as the chorus mention the sea, mermaids and else.

I hope you enjoy this cover. It was one of the easier ones I have recorded so far. Not too many attempts to get the final take. And for that I'm thankful! See you next week!
