We're back on this competition. As a rule of thumb, I'm taking a week off every time I win a cycle of this festival. With that out of the way, I'm glad to be back with some hard stuff on the musical side.

There are many types of Joropo in Venezuela. The one we play on the East Side is quite challenging and takes a lot of right hand to make it sound good. One of the most important singers in the region is Hernán Marín. He's also a researcher of music. So, a kind of self-taught Musicologist. One of this objectives in life has been to recollect all those forms of music of our eastern coast in Venezuela. His discographies are full of amazing songs and things we wouldn't know exists if it weren't because someone is out there documenting these forms of music.

He's also a composer. "Canta y Baila Joropo" is one of his most famous songs. It is a recipe of how Joropo Oriental usually behaves. It starts with the Joropo and ends in something we call Estribillo, which is a kind of improvisation that sometimes changes the rhythm of the song. So this one starts at 3/4 and then changes to 6/8. A cool fact about these changes is that it takes from two forms of European music, the Spanish Fandango (for the joropo) and the Italian Tarantella (for the estribillo). At some point in time, someone decided it was a good idea to add something else to the joropos and that became the standard for it. Thus, there's always some form of improvisation on these songs.

Taking up the challenge of playing this song is tough. You can't imagine how many times I tried to record this and then decided it had to be done in two parts. Of course, that's cranking up the challenge on the process of learning my instrument. Taking Joropo Oriental into a soloist arrangement requires understanding many things about rhythm and how to keep a pulse while doing variations on the phrases you play. It's an amazing learning experience.

But that's enough of it. My teacher told me we'll record this one this year. This is part of my training to do a good job on a duet.

Estamos de regreso por aquí. Como una regla general, voy a tomerme una semana libre siempre que gane algún ciclo de participación instrumental. Dejando eso de lado, aquí estamos con otro reto musical.

Existen varios tipos de Joropo en Venezuela. El del oriental del país es particularmente complejo. Requiere de una mano derecha bien pesada y suelta para generar patrones rítmicos. Uno de los músicos más importantes del género y del oriente venezolano es Hernán Marín. Además de eso, también es un investigador en su área. Es un musicólogo empírico. Uno de sus objetivos ha sido documentar las expresiones musicales de las costas del oriente venezolano. Su discografía está llena de música que podría pasar desapercibida si nadie se tomará el tiempo de documentarla.

Además, es un compositor. "Canta y Baila Joropo" tiene que ser de sus temas más famoso. Es una receta para enteder el Joropo Oriental y sus movimientos. Empieza como Joropo y termina como Estribillo, un tipo de imporvisación que suele cambiar el ritmo del tema. Así que vamos de 3/4 a 6/8. Un detalle muy interesante de esto es que el Joropo Oriental es una amalgama de géneros. En su vertiente europea, es muy obvio que viene del Fandango español y la Tarantella italiana. En algún momento de su historia, a alguien se le ocurrió que la mayoría de estos temas tenían que llevar un tipo de patrón rítmico diferente para terminar. Y así estos joropos ganaron esta estructura.

Tomar el desafío de lograr una versión solista de un tema tan complejo es rudo. No se pueden imaginar cuántas veces tuve que volver a grabar para sacar esto. Eso hasta decidir que tenía que grabar las dos partes por separado para luego unirlas. El Joropo Oriental en versión solista requiere un entendimiento del rítmo y un pulso casi perfecto para variar los patrones que se ejecutan sin perder el tiempo. Realmente es una experience de aprendizaje como pocas existen.

Aunque eso es suficiente por ahora. Mi profesor me dijo que vamos a grabar esta pieza este año. Así que este video es mi preparación para hacer un buen trabajo en ese dueto.
