Hive Music Festival | Week 113 round 2 | La Voy a Tocar A Pie by Luis Escaray

For this second round of the Hive Music Festival, I've come with a Gaita that I like a lot and has become a staple of the beginning of Christmas in Venezuela. It's La Voy a Tocar Pie by Luis Escaray. This song is one of the hits of the group VHG.

The song was made to be catchy. Once you listen to it, you're hooked. It plays on a modern style of Gaita even when it mentions that the song itself is a reminiscence of the traditional style of playing this genre of music.

It even adds something quite interesting as a sort of jingle at the end to go back to the theme. It is a part that's akin to tropical genres like salsa, son and the related kinds of music.

Learning the song and playing it wasn't particularly difficult. Gaitas tend to be tough when their harmonies have lots of chords. I have one that has those characteristics saved for the last round, but for now, enjoy a much simpler song. I didn't add more because this is what you could call a song to be sung. The phrases keep repeating themselves in the melody. However, the lyrics change. And the end of the original song you can listen to children singing. It also makes use of other resources of intertextuality. This addresses not only different composer but also other songs in the same genre to explain certain features that are common in gaitas.

Having such a song in the repertoire can give you a spot in any kind of Christmas celebration that comes around your way. Maybe I'll get invited to play somewhere. Who knows? I just hope they have some hallacas.
