We're keeping up the pace with round number two. This time, we bring back a piece which isn't listened very much, but some of the older folks might recognize as it used to be one of those waltzes played during quinceañeras (or so I think). It's a piece by composer Francisco de Paula Aguirre, Dama Antañona. It is a song that encapsulates the longing for older fashions among women of the first decades of the 20th century in Venezuela. Some of the vibe still clinging to the colonial days during the changes in the country.

I believe this song has something to do with an event that takes places in Cumaná which is called Noches de Antaño. I have never been there, but people tend to enjoy some experiences from the old Venezuela. That in which aristocracy was a big thing and parties in houses included dancing waltzes and other genres of the time. The olden days when there were pianos in many households.

The waltz is a very interesting piece. It must have the hardest to play interlude of any piece in the traditional repertoire. That says a lot about the composer. This was his most famous pieces as it was played in many houses and other places. Definitely a favorite of the aristocracy of the time.

For my cover, I tried to keep to the original melody and movements of the piece. And that's everything I can tell about. That middle section was really hard to memorize!

Dama Antañona

Continuamos en el ciclo. Para esta segunda ronda, traemos una pieza que ya no se escucha tanto, pero seguro que la gente con más edad la recordará. Probablemente era uno de esos valses que se bailaban en los quince años de alguien. Es un vals del compositor Francisco de Paula Aguirre llamado Dama Antañona. Es una pieza que habla sobre la añoranza a costumbres tradicionales y sobre la figura de la mujer en la sociedad de principios del siglo XX. Algunas costumbres de tipo colonial todavía estaban en voga durante esos años.

Creo que el título de la pieza guarda una relación estrecha con este evento anual que se da en la ciudad de Cumaná llamado Noches de Antaño. Durante esas noches, las personas pueden disfrutan de algunas tradiciones que han salido de la sociedad. Hay bailes, comidas, vestidos típicos de la Venezuela de principios de siglo XX. Aquellos tiempos en que la aristocracia todavía era algo y existían pianos en los hogares de varias personas.

Este vals es una pieza interesante. Creo que tiene el interludio más difícil de toda la música tradicional. Eso dice mucho sobre su compositor. Esta pieza fue su canción más famosa. Según se dice, se escuchaba en casi todas las casas importantes de la arístocracia y fue galardonado varias veces.

Para mi cover, intenté mantener fiel a la melodía original. Eso es todo lo que puede decir. Ese interludio es muy difícil. Me tomó un buen rato memorizarlo.
