Sneaker-net Concert Publicity

Well... I guess it was a combination of Sneaker and Car, in Australia, it would be pretty difficult to walk everywhere!

So, about a month out from our next concert... and that means that ticketing is open, and marketing and publicity needs to be started again for the specific concert. That means digital marketing has started on Facebook (yep, our target audience is still mostly on Facebook...), concert listings are up on all the various digital noticeboards, press releases are distributed, and some interviews are lined up. Plus, the mailing list has been contacted with a first notice that there is another concert coming up!

And that means that it is also time to start the physical distribution of flyers and posters to various places around the city. Sometimes, I do wonder if it is worth it... but based on feedback during the last concert's ticketing flow, it does appear that some people did find us via the physical marketing... and it only takes a few people to buy tickets through that channel to make back our costs on the printing of the material, and it doesn't hurt to have a physical presence around the town as well.

So, this time, I wasn't doing too much in the way of hunting down new places to put things... I had done that last time, and it was too time-consuming to do a similar thing this time especially with a several concert projects coming up in the next month plus the grant writing and other administrative things. I pretty much did the similar circuit as before... and only chose a couple of new places in the same general areas to duck in and ask if I could leave flyers or a poster.

In general, I found that bookstores and record stores were the most receptive... as were sort of "arty" cafes or coffee shops in more affluent areas. I think that the concept of having concert flyers fit better with the places that are aiming for a more "cultured" or "artistic" feel to their places rather than a fast coffee in and out sort of thing. They are the places where they want people to linger, or to have a regular local clientele.

Last time, I found out that larger institutions like museums and that sort of thing are less keen on independent flyers... they tend to just showcase their own stuff, or if they do have a flyer stand, it is from commercial distribution companies which does tend to keep things a bit neater! I am definitely going to use one of those services for our general year-long series promo... it will mean that we get some exposure in those critical "important" landmarks whilst reducing the amount of driving and walking around that I will need to do.

Still, it is nice when you are out and about hanging up posters and distributing flyers... and people come up to you and are interested, have a little chat, and then end up taking one for themselves. Or you have someone who has been to your concerts come up and introduce themselves!

It is quite a bit of work to get the word out that there is a concert coming up... but it has been sort of successful. We have had much better audiences than expected... and other similar groups have told me how surprised they are that we are growing so quickly in such a short time. I guess it helps that I'm sort of singularly focused when I put my mind to it, and will just get out there and do all the poop stuff myself.... but it hasn't hurt to have such an interested community support and just as importantly, several lucky breaks!

Anyway, I did a big round of flyers and posters today... ran out of them too! And there were still places on the list to visit... and a couple of new areas to try out. I had to print a new set, and this time, I'm also experimenting with one new size format... a larger A3 poster for outdoors, less good paper though... just so that I'm not wasting the good A4 poster prints on locations that get exposed to the elements!

I'll give the physical distribution a break over the weekend and start up again on Monday. I need to finish the grant writing, and I also need to finish the electronic stuff as well.. writing to affiliated groups to ask them to help publicise on their own channels and mailing lists.

Busy week ahead!
