New Music Work Desk!

New Work Desk!.jpg

I've been wanting to do this for quite some time... getting a tilting drafting/drawing desk so that I could have all my music on it instead of overloading a regular music stand. Or worse, having a music stand that would end up with different piles of music all over the place (doesn't bother me, but my wife goes nuts...) and with missing pencils, bits of music equipment, and all of that scattered everywhere.

I had ordered this particular one in a little while ago, but I hadn't had time to set it up... it was a flat-pack sort of assemble yourself sort of thing, but not an IKEA one. Now that I'm down with Corona, I have lots of time to do things around the house. So, I figured that I may as well build this thing! Hopefully my slightly fuzzy brain is going to cope with the instructions...

First thing is to put everything around and start looking at the instructions. I do have to say that this instruction manual is a good deal better than the IKEA ones! But as I worked through the various steps... I did start to notice that they had sometimes mis-labelled things and sometimes had things in the wrong place (generally a L-R flip...). And there was this one schematic that was weirdly Escher-like in its construction... I'm pretty sure that the drawing was weird, nad not my hazy brain... but I can't really say for sure!

But points for trying to do a good one though, and still a good deal better than the IKEA ones!

Okay, labelling the screws and bolts are a REAL bonus! And separating them out on a cardboard backing that is labelled and held in place with tape... Oh man, this is self-construction heaven! No more dumping a random bag of stuff into a bowl (something that my wife hates...) and trying to figure out which is slightly longer/thicker or not!

... and the parts are labelled as well! Holy crap! No more guessing if the randomly weird shape in the picture is sort of like the one that you are holding... or if it is the other three which are similar but different!

So, finished over two days... I got a bit puffed on the first day. This is awesome! An extendable desk... cloth drawers... pen and other holders! I will have to the space for all the things to do my violin practice!

My wife said that my girls would want to claim it for themselves... and she was right, as soon as they got home from school, they asked if they could have it... or at least share it! GRRRRRR... MINE!

I will have to figure out how to make the best of the upper half space though. I might need to fit another ledge in the middle? But that would ruin the table as a drawing table (but that works for me...). Perhaps something that is secured at the edge instead? or is just screwed on, rather than glued... maybe something that hangs from the top? Hmmm... something to think about when I next visit the hardware store.

Wow, this looks cool. My son would love it for his music scores.
But I don't have a solution for myself 😂 I just keep filling the shelves and wardrobes!! 😱 with my scores. 😂

Oh, and we always lose some music, then I have to search in his pile, and vice versa. Last week I found his scores with me, I took them accidentally hahaha

Oh, we have giant bookshelves of music as well! This is only for things that I'm currently working on! My wife has hers loaded on the pianos, fortepianos, and harpsichords... each has several piles on it!

That is a really awesome table. Drafting tables serve all sorts of great purposes, though you're right that unless you're drafting or creating visual art, the top part of the table is almost dead space. When I was studying I used to c-clamp a 2x4 about halfway up to use it as a makeshift shelf to hold a book.

That's a good idea, a clamp to hold the top! Thanks for the tip!
