Holy Crap... a Flurry of Good News

To say that I've been a little bit nervous in the lead up to our first concert for this year's launch series is a little bit of an understatement! There are just so many things that I'm learning about running an ensemble, and although I was warned that it would be a full-time or at least a constant job... well, it is essentially a constant job.

Hopefully, as things get set up (infrastructure-wise) and as I get better and faster at doing all the things due to experience... well, hopefully, things will feel a good deal less hectic, and I will know what works better or less so... instead of just trying to shotgun everything!

But, I have had lots of good will and support from colleagues and the local community, and that has been so much help! I hadn't expected such support, and I was scared that I would be just pushing everything myself only... and now, there are a few organisations helping to put out the word! Of course, there is still a lot of the behind the scenes stuff that is still needing to be done myself... but that is again the nature of running and launching your own pet project! You can't expect others to be as invested as you are!

So, the coming week has been (and will be a flurry) of juggling work on tour, whilst tripping back home to do interviews in person (and one on radio!)... and just before I left home today, I got the stupendously great news that I was successful in getting the small arts grant that I had applied for!

I hadn't really expected anything from the application, and I had designed the year's series to be able to function without it... but to have it means that there is less stress about how everything works out... and more importantly, it is a stamp of approval that can be quite important as well!

When I told my wife, she wasn't surprised... she said she had no doubt about the strength of the application... but I really didn't think that I was going to get it. That said, she doubts the things that she does well... whilst I'm always being her cheerleader! Funny how we have the similar outlook on our own and each other's abilities!

Anyway, the temptation is that with the extra "unexpected" money... that I go and try and do more stuff with it. Add in more players and all the rest of that... the temptation is really quite great... but it would be squandering the grant, and it would be quite foolish to just burn money just because it is there. I do have a little additional tweaks that I can make to the players that I have asked to do the concerts... I can definitely add in a student or two, to help fulfill one of the stated pillars of the ensemble, which is to help train the next generation of students in my particular specialisation of music... and more to the point, my particular strain and interpretation of what it means!

Oh... it has been a long day. First the great news, then a long drive and rehearsal... then a long drive to the place where I'm being put up. Early start as well, as my wife had an early morning rehearsal which accidentally woke me up when the alarm went off... I think I'm going to call it a night. My brain is on a high... but slowly shutting down!

Thank you! Yes, I'm fairly sure the performance end of things should go well enough... after all, that is what I'm supposed to be able to do well! The rest of the stuff is a bit of a steep learning curve, but there have been many people willing to help me learn!

Congratulations all round, extra money going toward training some students sounds like a wonderful way to spend some of the grant.

Well done, so glad you are taking the bull by the horns and finding many happy to assist.

Thank you! The biggest step was just being brave enough to start it and to put myself out there as the person to start it. I'm really looking forward to having the funds to help students learn this Early Music stuff!
