Eurovision in Australia!

Something that my wife and kids got really into when we were living in the Netherlands was the annual craziness that is Eurovision. And to tell the truth, I sort of also sort of started to like it! When I was younger in Australia, we would watch it as university students... just cause it was just so kitsch and hilarious... and it really still is!

However, now that we are back in Australia... the actual event is a bit niche... and the time zone different means that we have to wake up crazily early in the morning to see the live broadcast of the finals. And you HAVE to watch the live broadcast... so that you also get to vote, and you get to see the nail-biting distribution of voting in what must be the most messed up system of voting that I have ever seen!

Last year was our first Eurovision down under, and only my wife and older daughter made the broadcast at the start. I joined in a little bit later, and my younger one didn't make it at all to her great disappointment. We did try to wake her, but she kept falling asleep again!

This year, all the girls managed to wake up for the live broadcast and stayed for the entire duration... I plead out of it, as I had a concert to play that day and I functionally really badly if I don't have enough sleep. I did join in when I woke up for the last parts of the voting session, which was hilariously weird as always...

Honestly, the whole thing this year smacked of a Hunger Games parody! I'm sure that it probably wasn't intentional (probably...), but it was hilariously gaudy and kitsch... exactly like the Capitol City broadcasts of the Games!

... I mean... really?

The girls did show me some of their favourites after the contest was over. I have to say that I was a huge fan of Finland's "Cha Cha Cha", and of course, Australia's entry was pretty good too. But on the whole, I think that the quality this year was a bit down on last year's entries. I really didn't have any that I thought were that great...

Personally, I more attracted to the goofy entries... probably because the whole event is so goofy anyway, so I'm just not really a fan of the "serious" acts... and the really "commercial" acts are really horrific as well. So, Cha Cha Cha was a hands down winner for me... and I was pretty disappointed that it didn't take the prize! Ah well... no accounting for taste!
