Eep, Job for the Luthier!

Eep, Job for the Luthier!.jpg

Sigh... this is probably a normal thing... but it definitely isn't something that I like. The end pin on one of my violins is just loosened itself... which is quite a feat given the amount of weight and tension pulling on it... but here it is, sticking out a bit... about a centimeter or two (half a cow's toenail for the Americans out there...), and it does means that it is quite annoying to play on. Plus, it probably needs to be fixed up before it pops out completely and leaves me with a dropped bridge and soundpost and lots of strings hanging loose and flopping around!

I checked with the local luthier to see if he could fit me in tomorrow morning... and he could. But I also checked to see if this was probably something that I could fix up myself. He did give me some simple instructions... but in the end, I balked at the part where I need to apply enough force for it to "slide" back in... honestly, it didn't feel like it was going to slide anywhere!

Now, likely, I just needed to apply more force... but I chickened out. This is a violin that has survived since the 19th century... and I'm not going to be the idiot that causes it serious harm!

... so, I called up again, and said that I wasn't comfortable doing it... and would rather that an experienced pair of hands would do it!

So, no playing this evening... I used my crappy throwaway violin for teaching, and didn't try to use this... just in case I popped it out even more!

I will drop by and have this fixed up first thing in the morning whilst on the way to a rehearsal. Probably should just bring an extra violin... just in case of disaster!

Brother I understand how annoying it is.... I don't play violin, but trombone, but I used to have a tenor trombone with transposer, it got damaged and as I could I repaired it until I got the money for a luthier to fix it better... It's frustrating when your music partner suffers damages, it's very desperate...

I hope that with God's favor you can solve that problem.

All my instruments are now serviced and ready to play into the next year again! Mostly little fixes, but several of them needed a little bit extra work!

I have no idea what I'm looking at but anything requiring "a bit of force" on something where I'm not sure what I'm doing is definitely nerve-wracking x_x moreso when it's old! Hope it's a relatively easy fix for the luthier and you have it back in good shape in no time :)

Haha... it took him a couple of minutes, and he definitely knew what he was doing! Glad I took it to him!
