Day of Editing and Mixing

Day of Editing and Mixing.jpg

Well... the day finally arrived, our ensemble core (my wife and I) did a recording at the end of last year... and we have been scrounging time in between various projects and just being parents to get all the preparations done for this day of editing and mixing at the recording engineer's little cave!

... and we managed to get all our prep work done ahead of schedule. We were fortunate that we had a few single take with no edit options... and then the ones that needed edits were just large patches. Honestly, we aren't that keen on recordings that are Frankenstein monsters of edits... and that is pretty much most of the things. We prefer things that are more honestly representing the performers... rather than the slick marketing stuff that comes out... and the performers are NOWHERE close to the audio recordings! In fact, for some pop stuff... it is hilariously and woefully different!!!

... but the recording companies need to sell a product... and often that product isn't actually music!

So, we got all the basic edits done in less than 90 minutes! And then we moved to handling the intricacies of mixing for the next few hours. And when we say we... the recording engineer did most of the legwork, and we were mostly doing A/B testing!

But in the end, we are pretty damn happy with the result... and the little venture that this recording project has turned out much better than expected! The original goal was to just have a little mixtape sort of thing that we could use as a business card for concerts organisers and festivals... and now, we are seriously considering that we would actually release it for streaming and local distribution.

What we do love about it... is that is us playing. No safety rails or anything... we are playing as if we were playing a live concert. And the recording engineer was quite happy with the whole thing... and he said that he learnt a lot about Baroque music from the way we played it... it opened his eyes to our understanding that it is fun, passionate, and gritty... and not the academic, rigid, and dry stuff that normally passes for Baroque and Classical!

So... score one more convert to our cause!

YAY!

The final mix will be in our hot little hands in the coming week or so... and then we have to figure out what to do with it...

Fingers crossed that we have captured the vibe of our concerts... we are listening to the first compressed mix... and it sounds like us!

Esa es la mejor noticia! Lograr que una grabación suene con la esencia real de la banda es el mayor reto en el estudio. Si suena a ustedes, entonces el trabajo está bien hecho. ¡Mucho éxito con ese estreno

That’s the best news! Getting a recording to capture the band's true essence is the biggest challenge in the studio. If it sounds like you, then the job is well done. Much success with the release
