Contented Bliss...

Wow... I actually skipped a day of posting for the first time in who knows how long yesterday! A long drive back between projects to actually put on my ensemble's first concert of the year, the first with arts funding, the first of a proper series... wow! The actual crunch time, with so much preparation coming to a head from the weeks before... radio interviews, print interviews, audio interviews, and press releases... all the stuff that is completely necessary, and all the stuff that I really don't like doing that much..

... and in the end, there was so much more audience than we had ever expected! It was a smallish venue, but we hadn't really expected much from a first start... but there has been so much support, and with that, the attendant weight of expectation. The venue was nicely full... and the ticket sales have exceeded what we needed to break even, and so with the funding, we are in great financial position for the rest of the year coming! I was starting to doubt myself, if having such a messed up rehearsal schedule, whilst travelling so much and juggling two different projects at the same time was going to end up being a good idea.

And there were a couple of momentary lapses in concentration that quickly passed. But in the heat of the moment, the performance and presentation seemed to come across well. The audience really seemed to enjoy it, and the immediate feedback was decent... we had a reviewer there, and so, despite the fact that we shouldn't be really on critical feedback to inform our self worth, it is important for the marketing and public persona.

We had an amazing cross section of people in the audience, students... tertiary students, fellow musicians, past lecturers and mentors, general public, and many more! Unlike most "classical" style concerts, we had a good deal more younger people... and I'm hoping that our style of playing and presentation will keep them on board and perhaps even grow that group of the audience. And without alienating too many of the older people who might be expecting a less raucous version of violins and harpsichords!

But still, this is the vision and performance that we are presenting, and if th

y don't like it... there are always other groups.

I was also so proud of my guest performers, who stepped up to the slightly different way of playing, and played really quite amazingly as well! I think they were a little bit unsettled at the start, but it appears that they enjoyed it and found it fun to play!

... so, immedately driving back to Sydney to complete the other project and then to return home. In time to prepare for another concert this Thursday on modern violin... with my wife playing piano. Then... a little bit of a breather with other people's projects... and then I have to start thinking about the next concert in the series!

Phew... running an ensemble is more difficult than I had thought... but so rewarding as well!
