Arts Organisation (Non-Profit) Reporting

Phew... that was easier than feared... well, at least the creation of the required material... it is still up to the regulation gods as to whether or not we have done it all correctly! But we are a small organisation, so the likelihood that they will look or even come down heavily on us is minimal... at worst, it will be a... could you please check and include these things???

Anyway, our music ensemble is registered as a non-profit and cultural charity with the federal regulator for non-profits and charities. And that gives us the exemption from income tax and GST which is quite critical for arts organisations which already run close to the red-line for most of the time.

However, in exchange for those tax benefits, we do need to abide by certain regulations... and most importantly, yearly reporting. Of course, we try to do the right thing... but there does seem to be a LOT of people and organisations that try to use these non-profit and charity regulations as tax dodges... which is REALLY fricking annoying if you are a genuine charity organisation trying to contribute back to the community. But people will be people... and arseholes will always look for shady ways to "get ahead".

Anyway, we have to produce a financial and an annual report... something that we've never had to do as freelance musicians... but running an ensemble has been a steep learning curve in all things, administrative, legal, and finanical!

This is our first full year of mandatory reporting... and we had run a sort of test run last year, it wasn't mandatory, but we wanted to do it so that we had some experience in producing the finance and annual report ahead of the mandatory version.

And thank goodness for that training run... it was a bit time-consuming last year (the optional one)... as we had to get everything set up properly so that we could easily access the numbers and produce a decent report.

However, all that prep work paid off this year in this mandatory report... as it only took a couple of day or so to write up. All the data was ready to go at the end of the financial year, and the reports were easy to compose within the template that we had already done in the previous year!

So, the reporting wasn't as onerous as we had feared... but most of that was due to good book-keeping throughout the year, and the test run in the optional year.

... and now we can get back to planning the coming year of concerts, workshops, and touring!
