ARRRGH, Red Tape!
Sigh... so much red tape everywhere... and at the moment, I'm dealing with two instances of it.
The first one is for the tree that was damaged a few weeks ago in a storm... and we are waiting on the approval from the government to take it down or not. Insurance and arborist were quick off the mark... and, emergency government approval was granted for pruning, the insurance claim was approved, and the arborist made the area safe immediately.
Then the government inspectors came out and checked the tree... it was deemed to not be an immediate emergency and so we went into the regular process instead of the emergency approval process. Fine... but it will be at least 35 days before anything gets done... and more if we have to appeal the decision. Both the insurance and arborist are quite adamant that the tree is not safe anymore, as about a third of it is missing on one side and it is now quite top heavy and one sided! But everything can wait for paperwork...
... and on the other hilarious side of things. Our university where we do some work as musicians and teachers is undergoing some pretty severe restructuring... which seems to be mostly getting rid of the people who actually teach and leaving the administration in place and well paid... ahem...
... anyway, that has meant that a good chunk of people have resigned or taken leave or are just in hiding... and now we don't know who we are supposed to report to when we need to move keyboard instruments! And apparently... neither does anyone who is in charge... despite the lengthy email chains and non-sensical gibberish that is constantly being churned out for me to immediately delete without reading.
So, after a gentle reminder... things started moving again. Now, as a bit of a background... under the old "system" the person in charge of the instruments understood that we had over two decades of moving, tuning, and performing on these instruments... and that that might be more useful than a piece of paper saying that. So, we asked for the instruments... he approved the use, and then we moved and tuned, and performed, and then returned them. Easy...
... but he is now gone. And the first request to use an instrument for a university project has now taken the potential turn towards... we need paperwork. ARRHGHGHGHGGH... we had also written the bloody protocols in the past, and that was painful enough... and now we need more paperwork?
Honestly, I sometimes wonder if there is an entire industry built around making easy things much more complicated... Well, that's not true... I don't wonder, I KNOW that most of society (especially in Australia) depends on making easy things complicated so that everyone has a job.
... half the time, I don't even understand what people have written... it is so opaque and full of nonsense gibberish that ends up saying pretty much nothing. Do people really think that writing like that makes it seem intelligent?

Making things more complicated in a regular day just inconveniences the customer.
To them, they're just trying to get their cut from the customer..
Ah yes... and it makes jobs for people as well.
Wow, that sounds rough. I am sorry you are going through that. Uncertainty at your work is never a fun thing and it can flow over into so many other areas of your life. I hope they get things sorted out soon. That's also pretty crazy that you have to get approval from the government to take the tree down.
Yeah, it is good in a way, as most people otherwise just raze everything to the ground... but the balance is a bit tipped now towards annoyance. They really need to employ more staff if they make the rules stricter.... making rules is easy, handling the knock-on effects is more difficult, especially if there is no budget for it.
Do they at least do a decent job of educating people why it's not a good idea to raze everything? I can see why erosion and things like that would be a concern over there.
