Apeiron Baroque: Paduana Dolorosa by Anon
Phew... it has been quite a while since I posted any music. But here is a lovely Paduana Dolorosa performed live by my little new period instrument ensemble, Apeiron Baroque last year in a concert called "Too Many Strings".
The piece is for four unspecified instruments, likely a gamba consort... but we used four violas instead. For this piece, we were joined by two very talented and interested young students who really shone in this entire project! It was the first time that we had included students in our "normal" concerts, following up on our idea that the best way to train students in our particular specialisation is to give them hands-on experience performing alongside established musicians.
It does dump them in the deep end a bit, as we like to have a short and intense rehearsal period that does leave a lot up to the individual discretion of the musicians, something that students aren't always well trained in. Normally, they are being told what to do and trained to play in a manner that prioritising avoiding mistakes... whilst we like to prioritise the unexpected evolution and risk-taking that we believe gives music life.
It does mean that everyone needs to be on high-alert, and be highly flexible and responsive both musically and technically. I love this approach, and I truly believe that it is something that got de-prioritised at some point in the history of "Classical music" training.
So, a bit about the piece... I've always wanted to perform this one after it was introduced to me in Europe. I've had the score following me around, waiting for the day that there were the rare four good quality violists in the same room and same concert! It is a "sad song" (literal translation...), but there is something crazily hopeful at the bottom of the sadness...
