3 songs, 3 good times.

Last week I wrote about how I was so blinkered that I didn't see the good things I had in my week. So, I thought I'll take advantage of posting my three favorite songs for the #saturdayselections and at the same time narrate three things that happened in my week that are worth mentioning.

Unrelated picture of vulcano Imbabura that I took from the dentist's window.

The first was meeting somebody new. I went to the local brewery last Sunday to have them try the first experiments on pretzels for their Oktoberfest, and forced the extra pretzels on the poor other customers, one of them being @mortgagenomad1, with whom we suddenly got into a 1h conversation about... everything. It's been a while since I had something like that, an immediate click with a sympathetic person. Throughout the week, we met circumstantially met several times, and I finally built up the courage to ask him to be my first victim to start on-board HIVE. It was like asking someone out to a date 🤣 Anyway, he's here now, and this is is pretty interesting introduction post for those interested: Who the hell is The Mortgage Nomad?

Since he came to the jam session yesterday, and actually played a few songs, here's one that we played which I hadn't touched in years. I put the base on the loop pedal, and only put the loop off in the bridge. I'm not good singing and playing more than 1/4 at the same time...

I was totally sick of this song as it was turned into party music, pseudo-electro, and of course drunk people gruelingly growling "Doo-do-do-do-do-dooo-dooo!" But yesterday, I noticed that I was not sick of it anymore. Pretty cool to be able to listen to it again. It's a great one.

The second thing is more of a reflection, or a rule - don't bargain with friends. A good friend, who has done a lot for me throughout the years (and I for him), was selling some furniture that fits well into our upcoming café/bakery. He said his price, I paid.

When I pay a friend, I know that the money will be used well, because I know him. If he puts a higher price because he needs money, I'll pay it if I have it. But that's very rarely the case. Some people feel compelled to get a better price for being friends, I don't. I like my money to stay in the local economy, to stay within my value system, within my community.

My friend is also an amazing guitarist, and his band actually published a few songs. This one is my favorite. The video is quite awesome, too, very spacy. They're going to play at the Oktoberfest at the brewery, the one I'm making pretzels for, and I'm looking forward to it.

I used the Radio-link here and hope you'll listen to their other songs, too. The mix of funk, rock, latin vibes and whatever one can think of is something that appeals a lot to me. As does their incredible timing.

The third thing had to do with Lily. She's 7 now, and clearly she's starting to understand concepts and consequences a lot better. I always made a point of challenging her to find solutions to her problems, adequate to her age, of course. And yesterday, it finally showed.

We were sitting at the local Chifa, a Chinese restaurant (well, the Ecuadorian version), eating our favorite Tofu dish. There's always a TV on, and Lily was sitting on a chair where the TV was in her peripheral view, so she was glancing over. I told her:

"You can either watch TV her or watch the movie I promised you in the evening."
"The movie!" was her clear answer. And she tried not to glance. But it's hard, screens have that hypnotizing effect. Suddenly, she looked at me with a little bit of shyness and asked:
"Dad, can we switch seats?" I asked her why. "Because I want to sit with the back to the TV so I don't see it."

Sounds like a little thing, but for a father battling the hyper-emotional and anti-ratio focus of the world, this little piece of reasoning and solution oriented behavior was exhilarating.

That good vibe and the starting development of consciousness and ratio reminded me of this song, from a long time ago. Still one of my favorite bands, just like Pataconfunk, a mix of every style on earth. This song is mainly ska.

How was your week?

What song describes it best?

It was really great meeting you as well, and yes, I think we clicked too. I travel around a lot, and for reasonably short stays in one place, so I don't get to make friends very easily, especially if I'm staying in a more remote place. I have had more fun and human interaction in the last week than in the last 7 months...and for that I'm grateful. Sad thing is that I leave this wonderful community in 5 days. Not the birthday present I wanted, but it's the one I'll get!

Now that's some bad planning there... Reminds me of the time that I backpacked through Germany, to see which University fits be best. As soon as I had found it, there was that connection, and the other cities just didn't connect with me at all. Just saying 😜

After switching seats, I hope you didn't glance at the TV screen... or "No movie for you!" 😂
That's awesome how Lily found a way to solve her problem! I think the 7–8–9 age range in children is amazing. They really begin to grow in ways they've not done yet and it is wonderful to watch! 😊
